The MI State Tournament brought a high level of talent to Grand Rapids this weekend, with teams from multiple age divisions competing throughout the event. For this article, my focus was on the Saturday morning action at MSA Fieldhouse on Courts 1 and 2, where the 15U, 16U, and 17U divisions featured a strong group of talented guards and backcourt players. From shot makers and playmakers to tough on-ball defenders and high-IQ floor generals, there was no shortage of impressive guard play throughout the morning session. Here are some of the backcourt standouts that caught my attention on Saturday at the MI State Tournament.

Maylin, a guard for Real Basketball, was one of the standout backcourt performers from Saturday morning at the PGH MI State Tournament. Playing up against older competition, she showed a strong feel for the game and handled the responsibility of running the point guard position with confidence and poise. Maylin stayed calm under defensive pressure, displaying a high basketball IQ and making smart decisions throughout the game. Her ball handling ability stood out, especially on a sequence where she used a controlled retreat dribble to help her team successfully break a press situation. Offensively, she showcased smooth mechanics on her pull-up jumper and consistently created quality opportunities for teammates with her court vision and passing ability. Defensively, Maylin stayed active with good hands and competed hard on that end of the floor as well. Her composure, decision-making, and overall skill set made for an impressive showing on Saturday morning.

Lyza, a guard for CCE, delivered an impressive all-around performance during Saturday morning action at the PGH MI State Tournament. She played with great energy from start to finish and impacted the game in multiple ways on both ends of the floor. Offensively, Lyza used a quick crossover to create separation and get past defenders, while also showing strong awareness moving without the ball on a well-timed cut that led to a finish at the rim. She was also effective from the perimeter, knocking down shots from beyond the arc with confidence. Her playmaking ability stood out throughout the game as she consistently made smart reads, including a pair of strong drive-and-kick passes — one to an open perimeter shooter and another to a post teammate inside. Lyza's court vision and decision-making helped keep the offense flowing, and defensively she stayed active with good hands and disruptive pressure.

Karsyn of [program_tooltip program_id='714462' first='Michigan' last='Premier'] 16U Guenther put together a strong performance during Saturday morning action at the PGH MI State Tournament. She showed confidence handling the basketball and did a great job facilitating the offense with her vision and passing ability. Karsyn was effective attacking the paint, including an impressive spin move in the lane that created a difficult scoring opportunity for the defense to stop. Her effort level also stood out on both ends of the floor. In transition defense, she sprinted back hard and came up with a big chase-down block that energized her team. She also battled on the glass and came away with several offensive rebounds, helping extend possessions with her activity and toughness.

Jayda, a guard for [program_tooltip program_id='962116' first='Aspire' last=''], impressed during Saturday morning play at the PGH MI State Tournament with her quickness, athleticism, and ability to create off the dribble. She consistently put pressure on the defense by getting downhill fast and attacking gaps before defenders could react. Her handle was a major strength throughout the game, as she controlled the ball with confidence and kept defenders off balance. Jayda also showed excellent body control when driving into traffic, finishing plays and maneuvering through defenders effectively. One of her standout moments came on a smooth spin move in the lane that was extremely difficult to defend. On the defensive end, she stayed active with good hands and made plays by disrupting ball handlers and passing lanes.

Caitlin, a guard for [program_tooltip program_id='1849321' first='Kalamazoo' last='Basketball Academy'], stood out during Saturday morning play at the PGH MI State Tournament with her toughness, energy, and all-around effort. She attacked aggressively off the wing, blowing past defenders and getting all the way to the basket for strong finishes at the rim. Caitlin also made a major impact with her hustle, consistently outworking opponents to come away with multiple offensive rebounds and extra possessions for her team. From the perimeter, she showed confidence knocking down shots from beyond the arc, adding another layer to her offensive game. Along with her scoring, she moved the ball well and made good decisions as a passer. Defensively, Caitlin stayed active with quick hands and competed hard throughout the game.
