We’ll look at 1 game in particular that I believe sums up their team and we’ll look at 3 players that played outstanding basketball in that game.
THE GAME
HYPE Athletics 2023 White played against Tipping Point 2023, earning a solid 72-53 win. The HYPE team used impressive athleticism to speed up the game. They pressured the ball and trapped at half court consistently throughout the contest. HYPE created more than a handful of turnovers that led to high percentage looks at the other end. The win was one of the more impressive defensive performances at the Derby City Duel.
THE PLAYERS
Asia Cochran Asia Cochran 5'8" | SG Westfield Prep | 2022 State MI (SG, Westfield Prep, HYPE Athletics 2023 Red)
Cochran was an absolute menace on D. She read a pass, stepped in the passing lane, and took the steal for a laying She applied full court pressure, created a turnover on the trap, and finished with an easy laying for 2. Cochran showed the ability to work off a screen. She read the defender as they worked through the screen, sized her up, and buried a look from 3. That being said, Cochran showed range from behind the arc, also hitting a catch and shoot triple. She also showed nice touch from mid range.
Layla Marshall Layla Marshall 5'8" | SG Westfield Prep | 2024 State MI (SG, Westfield Prep, HYPE Athletics 2023 Red)
Marshall showed some real fire at the Derby City Duel. She showed a willingness to battle under the rim and a relentlessness that can lead to buckets. Marshall had the look of an energy player that can effectively run the floor. She shared the ball on the perimeter and used it to get an open look from the corner 3 that she drilled.
Kaylin Moorehead (G/F, Jackson, HYPE Athletics 2023 Red)
Moorehead turned some heads at the Derby City Duel. She’s very comfortable playing a fast paced game. Moorehead excelled on the break where she showed she could handle the ball and lead it, as well as full in and finish from the wing. She finished tough in traffic as well. Moorehead even showed 3 point range on her jumper. She’s a prospect to watch over the course of grassroots season.
