As relayed in the previous report on players of the 2022 class, players were put through the paces of several challenging drills led by club and college coaches as well as others. The players broke up into four teams and finished the afternoon playing each other. What follows are brief notes on players from the 2023 class. This is the second in a series of articles breaking down the attendees by class.
Nire’ Barnes Nire’ Barnes 5'7" | SG Waukee | 2023 State IA , 5’5″, SG, Waukee Northwest (IA), All Iowa Attack – Barnes made a good run through the line of 9-10 challengers in the 1-on-1, make-it-take it drill. Got through all but one. On the day she showed decent strength, closeout quickness, and perimeter shooter ability. Lovers her left hand scoop shot. Stays with her shot to rebound.
Shelby Sylvester Shelby Sylvester 5'6" | SG Moore | 2023 State OK , 5’4″, PG, Oklahoma Christian Academy (OK), Oklahoma Aces – Fair lateral quickness but needs to show it consistently including when closing out on perimeter shooters. A three point threat, Sylvester puts decent arch on her jumper.
Chloe Clevenger Chloe Clevenger 5'6" | PG McPherson | 2023 State KS , 5’6″, PG, McPherson, Lady Prospects – Clevenger showed off some strengths of her game, speed; quickness; energy; and handles. A dog defensively – a little Bullpup humor sorry – she battles all over the floor.
Amaya Gallegos Amaya Gallegos 5'8" | PG Garden City | 2023 State KS , 5’7″, PG, Garden City, SSA GameBall Basketball – Really liked her balance when finishing her perimeter closeout. Pops quick jumpers off the catch. Looking to see the top end of her range extended.
Destiny Yates Destiny Yates 5'5" | PG Manhattan | 2023 State KS , 5’4″, PG, Manhattan, Lady Prospects – Yates showed solid quicks, which showed up well in direction changes with and without the ball. Scores the mid-range jumper well and makes effective use of ball fakes to get her drive going. Uses the glass well on finishes.
Leah Durr Leah Durr 5'11" | PF Norwich | 2023 State KS , 5’11”, PF, Cheney, KS Dream Team – Big, strong and with powerful lower body that she uses well to spread out and create space while calling for the ball. Better hops than expected. Solid transition speed, closes out on shooters well. Elevates well on rebounds and goes back up quickly. Knows what she is going to do with the ball on the block catch before the ball gets there. Looking forward to seeing her show more in her bag of moves around the hole and her mid-range game in the upcoming year.
CJ Rignell CJ Rignell 5'7" | PG Riley County | 2023 State KS , 5’7″, CG, Riley County, SSA GameBall Basketball – Rignell has solid strength and speed and very good half court vision. Able to pull the trigger quickly on the three off a casual dribble or move. Does need more arch on her mid-range jumpers.
Talexa Weeter Talexa Weeter 6'0" | CG Goodland | 2023 State KS , 6’0″, SG, Goodland, Western Kansas Elite – While she finished with length, her speed with the ball in transition, and her quick jumper from all over the floor; what struck me immediately was Weeter’s agility and athleticism. I would like to see a tic or two more quickness in her reaction time defensively.
