The John T. Rhodes Myrtle Beach Sports Center had a wide array of high school hoopers for this past weekend’s PGH Top 250 Expo. Approximately 80 participants had showed up to take part in the festivities, which included a few from out of state.
Playing in the low post is all about making one’s presence known and felt. Here is who did just that this past weekend in Myrtle Beach.
Nadia Burns Nadia Burns 5'10" | SF Legion Collegiate | 2023 State SC – 2023 – Legion Collegiate (Rock Hill) – Burns let everyone know of her versatility as someone who can make an impact either playing the one or two as well as the three and four. She is an all-around playmaker who can either drive her way to the basket as well as make things happen in the low post with her scoring, rebounding and shot blocking. Burns tends to do most of her damage around the paint playing physical. As someone who averaged a double-double (11.4 points, 10.9 rebounds) for coach Kevin King with the Lancers, she is one opponents have to game plan for.
Aaliyah Lawrence Aaliyah Lawrence 5'9" | SF Silver Bluff | 2023 State SC – 2023 – Silver Bluff HS – After beginning her high school career as a freshman at Gray Collegiate, Lawrence moved on to Silver Bluff, where this past season, she helped the Bulldogs advance to the SCHSL 2A state championship game. Lawrence is a potential double-double every time she steps on the court with her scoring and rebounding abilities. She will give a team plenty of effort on defense with her ability to reject shots. Being a big means absorbing plenty of contact, which leads to plenty of opportunities for her to make her free throws. She too is a multi-sport athlete who also plays volleyball at Silver Bluff.
Hillary Offing Hillary Offing 5'11" | PF Dutch Fork | 2023 State SC – 2023 – Dutch Fork HS – Prep Girls Hoops has seen Offing a lot this offseason between the SCBCA Elite Camp and the Presbyterian College Camp this summer. Offing knows how to not only grab rebounds, but convert offensive boards into two more points for her team. On plenty of occasions, she will play with her back to the basket in addition to hustling for loose balls. Offing will also manage to create points simply off of how she plays. Hillary feels very comfortable knocking down a elbow-jumper at times.
The Silver Foxes were a 5A playoff team last season and with Offing as part of the nucleus of coach Faye Norris’ team, a deep playoff run could be in the offering.
Trinity Mickell Trinity Mickell 6'0" | C Allendale-Fairfax | 2024 State SC – 2024 – Allendale-Fairfax HS – Mickell plays basketball really well – including last season as a freshman for the Tigers in a 2020-21 campaign where she averaged 13.5 points per game. She is a vocal leader for any team and expresses confidence in her game as displayed by her ability to call for the ball at times when she knows she can get a score. She had one of the signature moments of this past weekend. With her team trailing 45-43 late, Jerchel Geathers-Washington Jerchel Geathers-Washington 6'0" | PF Carvers Bay | 2024 State SC tied it with a two-pointer followed up by a go-ahead two from Mickell which sealed a 47-45 victory for her team.
Jerchel Geathers-Washington Jerchel Geathers-Washington 6'0" | PF Carvers Bay | 2024 State SC – 2024 – Carvers Bay HS – Speaking of Geathers … she did not have far to go to get to Myrtle Beach as she comes from Georgetown County. Geathers played last season at Georgetown HS but now has found her way out to the Choppee Community and Carvers Bay HS. She is another who fully displayed how versatile a player she is – particularly on the defensive side as she played perimeter defense.
Geathers will get rebounds in addition to setting screens, clearing paths for guards to find teammates or the rim. She has also flourished as a shot blocker along with her work on the glass. She will also give a team offensive production from 3-point land and is a multi-sport athlete with track and field and volleyball on her athletic resume.
