Continue ReadingAmong the litany of early season tournaments that were held across the Palmetto State to begin the 2022-23 girls basketball season was one hosted by 3A Woodruff HS – the Coach Varner Tip-Off Classic.
The “Varner” is, of course, a reference to Willie Varner, who was a legendary longtime football coach at the school. It is the second time the Wolverines have hosted the event.
We at Prep Girls Hoops made the trip up to Woodruff to take in what was an exciting day filled with competitive girls basketball. Among those that already were in midseason form were a few standouts that were more than confident in their ability to drain their attempts from 3-point range.
At the end of Saturday’s slate of games, it was time for host school Woodruff to take to the court and Burnette made sure the fans in attendance drove home with smiles on their faces. Burnette was willing to take (and make) a good number of her attempts from 3-point range. She also displayed impressive court vision and proficiency in the passing game. While still relatively young in a high school basketball sense, Burnette consistently passes the eye test of being an on-court leader. She scored 19 points as the Wolverines concluded the day’s play with a win over Greer Middle College.
Brooke Holmes

While the Eagles finished last season with only five victories, if Chapin has more games similar to what they put together against Belton-Honea Path, look out, 5A teams. Holmes’ effectiveness particularly shines through in the transition game and she too will call for the ball when she believes she will make a play. Holmes displayed that she too is accurate from 3-point range. She is also a multi-sport athlete who has also excelled as a lacrosse player throughout her athletic career. Holmes finished with 19 points in a contest with Belton-Honea Path that was all Eagles from wire to wire.
Anya Anderson
Anya Anderson
She wears the No. 5 for the Blazers and she is looking to ensure her senior season is one where she thrives. Anderson is a vocal leader as a defender and on the offensive end of the floor gives her team a 3-point shooting dimension. While she does set herself up nicely to receive plenty of passes, Anderson also maintains plenty of activity even when the ball is not in her hands. Anderson also plays with a heads-up attitude which enables her to really up her steal totals. She led her team’s charge on the offensive end against host school Woodruff as she tallied 11 points.
