In September we’ll announce the Freshmen 50, an official 1-50 ranking of 2028 prospects. The 20 players on the Watch List will no doubt be part of that but there are others who could find themselves near the top of the list, as well.
In parts 1 and 2 we selected 10 players for the Watch List:
- Tate Addler Tate Addler 5'11" | CG Minnetonka | 2028 MN – Minnetonka
- Bethany Black Lance Bethany Black Lance 5'7" | CG Brainerd | 2028 MN – Brainerd
- Adele Changamire Adele Changamire 5'8" | CG Becker | 2028 MN – Becker
- Maggie Dyer Maggie Dyer 5'10" | SF Rochester Mayo | 2028 MN – Rochester Mayo
- Bri Foster Bri Foster 5'9" | CG MN – Park Center
- Annabelle Gothmann Annabelle Gothmann 5'8" | CG Milaca | 2028 MN – Milaca
- Natalie Heyer Natalie Heyer 6'1" | PF Chaska | 2028 MN – Chaska
- Peyton Hoffman Peyton Hoffman 6'0" | PF Climax-Fisher | 2028 MN – Climax-Fisher
- Amari Johnson Amari Johnson 5'9" | CG Spring Lake Park | 2028 MN – Park Center
- Chloe Johnson Chloe Johnson 5'11" | PG Duluth Marshall | 2028 MN – Duluth Marshall
Here are the next five incoming freshmen to watch:
Maggie Joyce Maggie Joyce 6'0" | CG New Ulm | 2028 MN – guard, New Ulm ( Minnesota Rise Wright)
We’ve written about the New Ulm forward a lot in recent months, and for good reason – the 6-footer has improved her game immensely and is gaining favor among numerous college coaches. There is a lot that Maggie does well on the basketball court. She is a responsible defender who does it with high intensity, she can score in a variety of ways, and she knows how to use her athleticism and strength to maximum advantage. But we are particularly fond of her demeanor; Joyce plays with passion, and has a hard-nosed, physical style of play that will serve her well at the next level.
Logan Miller Logan Miller 6'0" | PF Andover | 2028 MN – forward, Andover ( Minnesota Fury 2028 UAA)
Height is something that can’t be ignored in the game of basketball, and having it always helps. But when you add work ethic and skill into the mix it can make a player an amazing college prospect. Such is the case for the Andover 8th grader. Standing about 6’2 and still growing, Logan’s physical size and strength is daunting for opponents. She owns the paint on both ends of the floor; backing the defense down with ease for a quick 2 points, or blocking shots and grabbing rebounds left and right. Miller has all of the makings of a high-major post player.
Amelia Mills Amelia Mills 5'6" | PG Rochester Mayo | 2028 MN – guard, Rochester Mayo ( North Tartan Nike)
We’ve known about the star point guard from Rochester Mayo for a number of years now, and it is still quite clear to us that Amelia is one of the top collegiate prospects in the Class of 2028. She can do it all in the point guard position, whether it’s running an offense and being a playmaker, creating scoring opportunities for herself, or constantly forcing turnovers on defense, Amelia has it covered. Mills is coming off an outstanding season at Mayo High School, where she played a pivotal role for the Spartans and averaged over 15 points per game.
Ally Moore Ally Moore 5'6" | PG Orono | 2028 MN – guard, Orono ( North Tartan Nike)
The incoming freshman from Orono is another elite guard talent in the 8th grade class. She has many physical gifts in her game, including tons of speed, quick feet, outstanding court vision, and great natural instincts and feel for the game. Moore is also incredibly skilled in her craft. She can handle the ball with great control, find open teammates, and create her own shot opportunities. Ally became a key piece for the Spartans this winter and carried that momentum into the spring/summer season with North Tartan . Ally has to be a lock for the top 20 or higher, does she not?
Piper Ohnstad Piper Ohnstad 5'10" | CG Lakeville South | 2028 MN – guard, Lakeville South ( Minnesota Fury 2028 UAA)
Basketball observers tend to put players in a box, evaluating their potential for a particular position or role, but some players simply cannot be categorized. Piper is one of those players. Ohnstad is a unicorn. She has skill, size, strength and a high basketball IQ. She scores inside and out and can play with physicality. Her family basketball lineage is impeccable which, like it or not, is a huge factor as both mom and dad played at the University of Minnesota and sister Finley is headed for high-major Kansas State. I guess the only box we can put Piper in is the one for strong college prospects.
PGH scout Ally McGinnis contributed to these player evaluations.
