Laila spent her first two years at Ben Davis, lettering each year, so she comes to Warren Central with a great deal of experience. Now, with the playmaking guards the Warriors have, she should be in line to see the ball quite a bit off of their penetration. Laila has good size, developing strength, and she continues to grow. She is tremendously long, she runs the floor well North/South, and she is a vocal player. She pursues rebounds, blocks shots, plus she has a 15-foot jump-shot that has gained a lot more consistency.
With size at a premium these days, I’m a little surprised more schools aren’t recruiting Laila yet. She has grown consistently throughout high school, she is a solid North/South athlete who can get out and run in transition, plus she has some halfcourt skill. She does still need to finish growing, gain some strength, and become a little more fluid, however she doesn’t shy away from contact, she pursues rebounds, and she blocks/alters a lot of shots. She has a developing back-to-the-basket game, but she also has some touch in the mid-post. I am anxious to see what the next two years look like for her.
Laila continues on an upward trajectory in terms of her growth and development. She is probably closer to 6-3 now, extremely long, wiry-strong, and she runs North/South well, plus she has some bounce to her. Since she is still growing and has grown quickly, she’ll need to learn how to play lower and quicker laterally, but that should come in time. She is solid defensively, developing post skill offensively, and she can knock down the occasional 15-foot jumper. She has even drawn a handful of Division-I looks already.
Laila is nothing but upside at this time, and she is definitely someone who coaches will likely be recruiting much harder a year from now. She has great length, some bounce, end-to-end speed, and a wiry-strong, athletic frame. She still has the occasional “baby deer” moment, but you can see a great deal of talent, and some skill, within her game. She is solid with her back to the basket, but she almost looks like she prefers playing facing the basket in the mid-post. She likes to snag rebounds and push it up the floor a dribble or two as well. As it all comes together for her, watch out!!
