McKenna is having an All-State caliber season and will be needed if Mandan wants to make it out of a tough WDA to the state tournament in 2025. She is probably the best defender in the entire state. Her length and athleticism allows her to defend anyone of any size and position. She is one of the best shot blockers I have seen – her timing is incredible.
McKenna was outstanding on Tuesday and would have been even better if Bismarck didn’t do such a great job of denying her post touches. She got most of her points off of offensive rebounds, two baskets going for and-1 opportunities. Her rebounding was exceptional and she is one of the best defenders I have watched. She had at least 4 blocks, with her timing on contesting shots as good as it gets. She did everything she could to help her team against the Demons.
Johnson is a leader and workhorse for the Braves who are 7-0 and ranked #2 in AA. McKenna is putting up quality numbers with 12.6 ppg, 7.6 rpg, 1.6 apg, 1.6 spg, 44.2 FG%, 28.6 3FG%, 4 3FGM, 53.3 FT%. Johnson is tough around the basket and excels at creating space. A difficult matchup with her length, size, athleticism, footwork, and expansive finishing package.
McKenna had a great game on Saturday. She scored 20 points and had 11 rebounds and 3 steals. She also had 2 blocks. McKenna does a great job of sealing around the rim and pinning her defender below the rim for easy buckets. She also was able to take her defender off the bounce from the free throw line for high percentage scoring opportunities. Her timing defensively is incredibly impressive and she is an outstanding rebounder.
McKenna just signed with NDSU the other day, a program that is on the rise and has valued finding talented North Dakota girls. McKenna fits exactly what Jory Collins looks for in recruits: tall, long, and athletic. If she continues to work hard, her game will translate very nicely to the college level. She will be able to be disruptive on the defensive end and has the ability to defend multiple positions. McKenna is also an outstanding rebounder, having averaged 11.7 per game last season. The 2nd-Team All-State selection from last year should prove to have a nice senior season. I anticipate her being a solid choice for a 1st-Team selection in 24-25, as well as a WDA Senior Athlete of the Year finalist.
