This was my first time watching MBA play this past weekend, and they have a really nice group of kids. One player who stood out in particular was Myla Gortmaker. She showed a strong combination of skills, especially in how she operates within different actions. Whether coming off dribble handoffs or ball screens, she consistently made the right play and stayed within the flow of the offense.

Myla plays with good pace and control, showing a solid understanding of how to read the defense and react. She is comfortable handling the ball, can score when the opportunity presents itself, and does a great job of keeping her teammates involved. What stood out most was her decision-making—she rarely forced the action and instead took what the defense gave her.

She also showed the ability to stay poised in different situations, which allowed her to be effective throughout the game. Her feel for the game, combined with her skill set, makes her a dependable guard who can impact winning in multiple ways.

Myla’s defense is impressive!  Doesn’t give up anything easy!  I like her decisions on transition- she has no problem taking it hard to the basket and drawing the foul or dishing it to teammates. Battles hard for boards!

Myla jumped in front of a pass for the steal, took it the other way, looked off the defender, and scored the contested layup. She scanned the floor with good vision, threw strong skip passes, and hit cutters in stride. Myla communicated actively with teammates and finished well off two feet. I made note of how confident she was passing and dribbling with her off-hand. Myla made the extra passes to give teammates open looks, delivering accurate bounce passes into the low post. She worked hard to pressure the ball on defense and was an active rebounder. Myla put up a productive 10 points, seven rebounds, and four steals for Caledonia at the West Michigan Hoop Summit.

Myla made a strong impression as a freshman, earning All-Conference Honorable Mention by consistently bringing energy and toughness on the defensive end. She excelled at breaking up plays, reading the floor, and turning opponents’ mistakes into scoring chances for her team. With her motor and instincts, Myla is poised to take an even bigger step forward and be a major contributor for Caledonia in her sophomore season.

Myla had an impressive day at MBA tryouts, standing out with her defensive presence and relentless effort. She was constantly disrupting plays with quick hands, active feet, and great anticipation in the passing lanes. Her ability to create turnovers and turn defense into offense showed how valuable she can be on the floor.
