Sophia continued to improve as the weekend went on and became one of the most impactful players on the floor. Defensively, Sophia was elite, anticipating passing lanes, applying pressure, and making things difficult for opposing players. Offensively, she was extremely efficient, taking smart shots and converting at a high percentage. Sophia’s passing ability stood out as she consistently created scoring opportunities for her teammates and controlled the pace of the game. Her ability to impact the game without forcing anything made her a key piece to her team’s success.

Owensboro Catholic defeated Letcher County Central in convincing fashion, 59–35. Sophia is still working her way back to full strength, but her impact on the game is undeniable! She is a complete mismatch on the floor. She can attack bigs off the bounce, post up guards, and defend any position. An elite passer with a total skill set. Any college program would be lucky to have her on their roster!

Sophia is a lengthy wing with a well-rounded game. She’s a strong finisher at the rim, a reliable shooter from the perimeter, and a relentless rebounder on both ends. Defensively, her length and versatility allow her to guard different positions. In her freshman season she averaged 7 points and 5 rebounds per game. Sophia showed flashes of her potential last season and set the foundation for what could be a breakout sophomore campaign.

AAU TEAM: Lady Vision Elite 2028

Catholic has lost some talent to graduation but Sophia is ready to step into the spotlight as a Sophomore. Newby is a bigger wing who excels at getting to the rim and finishing. She has a ways to go as a three point shooter after only shooting 6/22 from three last season. Look for Newby to be one of the best Sophomores in Western Kentucky next season.

Owensboro Catholic is very good and having a great season but they have been relying on Karmin Riley Karmin Riley 5'7" | CG Owensboro Catholic | 2025 State KY and Aubrey Randolph Aubrey Randolph 5'9" | SF Owensboro Catholic | 2025 State KY to do most of the scoring. Enter Sophia Newby Sophia Newby 5'11" | SF Owensboro Catholic | 2028 State KY . Sophia has great size on the wing and is an efficient scorer for such a young player. Don’t be surprised if she’s a breakout player in the 3rd next season.

In one of Hancock County’s games back in February, Newby dropped 22 points to lead her Hornets to a 57-48 victory over Muhlenberg County. For the 2023-24 season, Newby averaged 10.6 points. She will trade a red uniform for a green one in 2024-25. Hancock County’s loss will be Owensboro Catholic’s gain as Newby will bring her many hoops talents to the Aces. Newby will be a worthwhile addition to an Owensboro Catholic team that finished with a 29-5 record and came within one game of the Kentucky State Sweet 16. She will fill the void left by the recently graduated Jenna Krampe, who averaged 12.8 points per game. 

Sophia is a versatile wing player with really good size and skill. She averaged 10.6 PPG, 6.4 RPG, and shot 75% with 89 attempts at the free throw line for Hancock County last season. Sophia can post up and score with her back to the basket and stretch the floor with the 3-ball. She is a gifted passer that can guard post and perimeter players on defense. She will be a great addition to an already talented roster at Owensboro Catholic.

Newby is one of the taller members of the Lady Vision Elite 2028 team as she stands at 5-foot-11. She is another one of the team’s premier defenders. Her length has clogged the passing lanes of many an opponent as she has been responsible for just over four deflections per game. In addition, she collects a fair amount of steals – over two per matchup this AAU season. Similar to Barber and Fortner, Newby is another one of the team’s leading in terms of field goal shooting percentage. She is shooting nearly 52 percent from the field to lead the team.
