Veyda was one of the very best players overall, not just posts, at the recent Prep Girls Hoops Georgia Expo at Lakepoint. When it came to the posts players in attendance, Jones was by far the best shooter from the perimeter making shots from everywhere on the court 18 feet and out. In the paint Veyda showed really good hands, catching and finishing with both, often in traffic. Her footwork was very good too as she was able to utilize up/under moves and drop steps before smoothly scoring. She plays a lot bigger than 6’1, especially on defense where she was able to block and alter shots. Jones has a chance to be one of the breakout players in Georgia this season if given enough touches on offense.
Jones is a walking double double. A player that can catch and finish in traffic. She also rebounds well in traffic and knows how to let the defense clear before giving it up in transition. Once the guard secures the ball, Jones sprints the floor and gets in position to score. Passes well inside/out. Always working for the loose ball. Will shoot the 3 ball if left open.
About 30 minutes into the event, I almost started texting some college coaches in the state that I am close with. If she isn’t taller than 6’1, Veyda definitely played like it on the interior where she was outstanding finishing around the basket. She showed great hands catching some quick, tough passes in tight quarters and smoothly got the ball up to the rim without pause. As good as Jones was on the interior, she was just as impressive shooting the ball from the perimeter, where she buried shots consistently throughout the day. Jones is big, long, and is very nimble on her feet, making her the kind of player college coaches want to identify early. This was my first time watching Jones play (not sure I had even heard her name prior), but she is about to see a major rise in the rankings the next time they are released. She has the potential to develop into a legit Division One prospect over the next two years.
Veyda’s endurance was on display against Wood Elite, having to play the full 32 minutes with no subs available. Jones was effective in the paint as she secured rebounds and drew fouls. She was able to corral tough passes on the move and flashed growing confidence with improved footwork inside. Veyda even stepped outside to shoot a three, an area of her game which could become a weapon down the line. With her size, frame and eagerness to improve, Jones is one to watch moving forward. On Sunday she double-doubled with 10 points, 12 rebounds and 1 steal, showing touch at the foul line shooting 6-9.
