With only one of these 2020 post players of the market, look for colleges to be highly looking at these players the next couple years.
Sharon Goodman – Crestwood
This past AAU season, Sharon Goodman was added to the 17u Barnstormers roster. She made a huge impact on the team by being a force on the inside. According to Barnstormers coach Nate Koch she is the best true post he has seen in the last six years. She has strong post moves, and for a game that has pushed many players to the outside, she provides a strong force inside that is hard to defend.
That type of skill set attracted many D1 schools to the Crestwood junior this past Summer. The University of Iowa was the school that finally landed her last August. Averaging 19.9 ppg, 7.1 rpg, and 1.88 bpg it is not hard to see how she will be able to make an impact at Iowa. Let’s remember she still has two more years to develop her skills.
She played a big part in Crestwood’s state title last March, as well as their state run in 2017. They won games with ease in the 3A title run, with closest game a 24 point win in the semi-final game. Crestwood graduated a core group of seniors, but we are sure that with Goodman anchoring this team, Crestwood will be able to reload for another run at state.
Taryn Scheurmann – Van Buren, Keosauqua
If you have a 6’3″ player in high school, you have size. If you are a 2A school with a 6’3″ player, you have a huge advantage. If that 6’3″ player has outside game to match her inside moves, you have dominance on your hand. That is what Van Buren has in 6’3″ junior Taryn Scheurmann.
Taryn has strong moves on the inside, and has the ability to go left or right. She not only positions herself well to get ball, but she also has ability to react to defense. Quickly making countermoves against the double team, she scores with ease in the lane. She has great movement away from the ball, shifting from inside to outside. With shooting range out to the 3 point line, that movement makes her an inside/outside threat. On defense it is hard for opponents to attack the lane. She does great job going straight up and amassed 157 blocks last year.
Last season Scheurmann led a young Van Buren team with 20.8 ppg, 9.2 rpg, and 6.54 bpg. With the return of 85% of last year’s 17-7 roster, look for Scheurmann to help lead them to a run to the Well.
LaTeah Willie – Council Bluffs, Thomas Jefferson
LaTeah Willie is a 6’0″ combo player for Council Bluffs Thomas Jefferson that can score many ways. She has ability to knock down the shot, but can also drive to the rim and finish. With the outside threat, defenses will close out hard on her, and she uses a great first step to fly past them. She can then flash to the inside and uses her strong frame to finish on inside. This strong ability to play inside along with her outside threat will attract colleges to recruit her as a stretch 4.
She led her team in scoring last year, as a sophomore, averaging 15.5 ppg for Thomas Jefferson. She also was impressive on defense, using her long arms to deflect and steal passes. She averaged 3.04 spg last year, and I am sure this will increase with a more experienced Jefferson team this year. The team went 14-9 last year, which is 2 more wins than Jefferson has had in last 8 years. She has had a lot to do with this turn around for this program.
Meredith Hoffman – Carlisle
Her freshman year, Meredith Hoffman played varsity on a very experienced Carlisle team. Going 18-5 that year, she was 2nd in scoring averging 14.0 ppg that year. That year they graduated 50% of their scoring, and last year the young team went 12-10. Look for that record to increase next year as Hoffman leads a more experienced Carlisle team in 2018-2019. Hoffman and Junior teammate Molly Hoekstra combined for 55% of Carlisle’s scoring last year.
Last year Hoffman averaged 13.4 ppg, 7.7 rpg, and 3.33 bpg. Nice stat line for any sophomore basketball player. Take into account that basketball isn’t the main focus for this 6’3″ post player, makes those number more impressive. Hoffman has been a three sport standout both of her years at Carlisle. With more experience for Carlisle look for those numbers to increase this year for Hoffman.
