The Bombers are 13-2 this season and currently check in at No. 13 in the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union’s Class 4A rankings. They’re doing it with a freshman and two sophomores leading the charge,
Josie Fleischmann, a 5-foot-7 wing, is among the talented trio of underclassmen. She’s been a big reason for the Bombers’ success this season, while averaging 10.4 points and 3.3 rebounds per game.
“I think my biggest strength is knowing my role in the game, and my 3 -point shot has been a big aspect of my game this year. When that’s not falling, I’ve improved this year in finding other ways to score,” said Fleischmann. “And if I’m not scoring, then finding other ways to contribute to the team, whether that be rebounding, or assists, or steals.”
Fleischmann says the key the Ballard’s success this season has been the togetherness of the team. They’re all in sync, and it’s translated to a sterling record.
“Our team has had a great season and a big reason is how well we mesh together. And I think team chemistry is very important, we all know each other’s role and if someone’s shot isn’t falling, we know someone else’s shot will be falling,” said Fleischmann
The very young Bombers — there’s just one senior on the roster — have big plans, not only for the remainder of the this season, but seasons to come.
“We can aim very high and I know this year we have high goals to make state and hopefully advance very far,” said Fleischmann. “And I think we have a state championship in our future, we have some time to work on that.”
When her sophomore season is complete, Fleischmann will head into an important offseason, and she’s not sure yet if she’ll play club ball, but she does intend to get in front of a lot of college coaches.
“This summer, I’m not sure yet, but I know I have plans to go to some college camps this summer, just to get some more experience,” said Fleischmann.
“I’m hoping to improve my game and get my name out there a little bit, so that some schools are looking at me next season.”
