It seemed as if both teams made adjustments from the first game but, results were much of the same. McNamara started hot taking a 8-3 lead to start the game, the Cadets regained the lead off of an Azzi Fudd three pointer to go ahead and never looked back. St. John’s never trailed again making a statement around the DMV and the nation that they should be the unanimous number 1 team. The Cadets led 23-17 after the first quarter, Fudd hit two 3-pointer in the second for the Cadets only points in the quarter and the Mustangs only managed 7 points to finish the half with SJC up 29-24. Fudd had 16 of the Cadets 29 first half points and Aliyah Matharu led the Mustangs with 6 points in the half. The scoring picked up some in the third quarter and Fudd added six more to her game high 30 points. Carly Rivera got into the scoring column hitting a three and scoring 5 of her 8 points in the third quarter. The Mustangs tried to rally behind Matharu who 8 of her team high 20 points in the third and the McDonald’s All-American Jakia Brown-Turner hit a big three adding 6 points in the period. The Mustangs still trailed 47-43 heading into the final period. Matharu and Liatu King combined for 12 points in the final quarter and the Mustangs tied the score at 55 with 1:55 to play, a three pointer by Caramina Tañedo, a steal and layup by Alex Cowen and a rebound putback by Malu Tshitenge-Mutumbo and the Cadets where once again victorious winning 64-58.
Five Takeaways From The Game:
1) The Cadets looked to get Azzi Fudd going early this game and she delivered with 10 first quarter points. Her quick release and ability to shoot off of the dribble was a lot for the Mustangs to handle as they threw multiple players at her.
Azzi Fudd2) Madison Scott finished with 7 points but, you have to appreciate her effort more than the production. She was in obvious pain and limped through the second half. She didn’t have her explosion but still managed to defend and rebound and even score off one and a half legs. Her recovery will be key as the season winds down.
Madison Scott3) Although the Cadets had no player outside of Fudd in double figures, other players made key plays in timely moments:
Kelis Corley came off the bench and knocked down back to back three pointers and a long two in the first quarter.
Carley Rivera scored all of her 8 points in the second half including a momentum swinging three that forced a Mustang timeout.
Malu Tshitenge-Mutumbo had eight 4th quarter rebounds including four on the offensive in resulting in 8 second chance points for the Cadets.
Caramina Tonedo’s only field goal was a clutch 3 pointer near the end of the game and perhaps the biggest shot of the game.
4) Liatu King was all over the floor working hard on both ends. She scored 13 points but, more importantly she emerged as a legitimate scoring option that the Mustangs can look to moving forward.
Liatu King5) Aliyah Matharu’s speed can bothered St. John’s. When Matharu turned on the jets there was no one on the floor that could keep up with her. She darted through traffic for 20 points with 8 in the fourth as she frantically tried to pull the game out for the ‘Stangs. She has led the team in scoring in both games this season and may be required to do it again if they are to meet the Cadets for a third match this season.
