Continue ReadingAs we continue our wrap-up of the Iowa State Tournament, we will be unveiling our evaluations for players in the freshman class to start it off. Among all classes we have 139 total evaluations with 13 of those in the freshman class. This isn’t an exhaustive list of everyone in the class at the event, but rather who played well or for extended minutes that we were able to get an eye on.
Jada Williams – 5’8 G – Mason City
Williams is a strong guard with the ability to handle and push it up the floor. She plays much bigger than her frame. Little thin right now but has three more years to fill out. Doesn’t show a ton of scoring right now but has the ability to get into the lane with the ball. Should be the next stellar guard for Williams.
Sadie Strutchen – 5’9 W – Marion
Strutchen is a really solid shooter for Marion. She patrols the perimeter and is trusted to have the ball in her hand. I really like her willingness to shoot but at times I think that she is a little slow in her decision making.
Aree Beckmann – 5’8 G – Cedar Rapids Xavier
Beckmann has a touch of ability to get into space by herself. A really consistent jumper release and is really to shoot when she gets the ball. Takes care of it pretty well and has the ability to rip off a couple shots in a row. Has a quick first dribble to the baseline off the wing. Development this summer is key.
Reagan Barkema – 5’11 F – Roland-Story
Barkema is a long and lankly wing who has a ton of length. She isn’t quick by any means but has the handle to be able to get to the rim. A really good looking outside shot that can fall when she is on. Really liked her ability to affect the game on the defensive end. Kind of in between positions right now, but I think that she grows a few more inches with her frame set up. She’s a player to watch in this freshman class as she grows more mobile.
Taylor Kvale – 5’3 G – Dike-New Hartford
Kvale has really impressed me with her toughness. Has a great motor and is a player who can get up in your face on defense and cause some trouble. Doesn’t score that much but needs to be pretty open to shoot it due to the size. With a bit of growth over the next few years I think you could see that scoring rise.
Ally Hoffman – 5’6 W – Cascade
Hoffman is a very solidly built wing with the ability to play in the mid-post very well. A quick move with her back to the basket allows her to get into the body of the defender and score the ball at the rim. She’s tough and plays well in the transition game. Can shoot it pretty well from the outside when set.
Lauren Wilson – 5’10 F – Springville
Wilson is a forward with a little bit of potential. She is pretty efficient scoring the ball at the rim and is a good rebounder. Not quick or fast but uses her body well to create space around the rim. In the next few years I think that she can become a very big back to the basket force if she wants to do so. Needs to have a much bigger motor.
Macy Sievers – 5’7 G – Newell-Fonda
Sievers is a very long guard prospect who should play a big role next year in the offense with a few graduations. She has the ability to make the jumper and reads the ball well coming out of the defender’s hands. Really good lateral movement and ability to get her hands on the ball. I think that she can be a difference maker on both ends, and already is.
Kennedy Kelly – 5’8 G – West Hancock
Kelly is a really high motor player who I thought had a really good state tournament. She has the ability to score at all three levels already pretty effectively. Always around the ball and trying to make plays for her team. Her best offense is probably on the deep ball right now but does a solid job at getting to the rim.
Emma Gipple – 5’8 W – Dowling Catholic
Gipple is still trying to find her footing a little bit on this Dowling Catholic team. Isn’t a scorer of the ball year but does play very solid defense. She isn’t going to wow you, but does pretty much all of the little things right. Doesn’t turn it over much, passes it well, and defends at a high level. Will be interesting to see her scoring come around once Clark is gone.
Anna Gossling – 5’5 G – Johnston
Gossling is a really solid shooter who gets to her spots on the floor fairly quickly. Really like how fluid she is with the ball and she has the ability to handle it in the open floor. She just doesn’t make any mistakes and in a freshman who plays minutes that is all you can ask for.
Jada Gyamfi – 6’1 F – Urbandale
Gyamfi is a little bit more of a post than her older sister. She is strong with the ball and really physical down inside the paint. I really like her skill in the post and her rebounding ability. Wouldn’t be surprised to see her end up more like her sister with the ability to handle it and score on the outside.
Andie Westlake – 5’9 W – City High
Westlake is a wing that has a really solid frame and does a lot of moving on the offensive end. She sees the floor well and does a great job of moving without the ball. Already a knockdown 3-point shooter, Westlake will continue to see her value grow with this City High team. I really think that she is going to make huge strides this summer as she has all the intangibles.
Ryley Goebel – 5’11 W – Center Point-Urbana
The best freshman performer in the tournament, Goebel led her team to the championship. She is a really long prospect with the ability to get her hands on the ball and finish at the other end. I thought that she played really poise and was very efficient scoring the ball. Goebel is so good defensively already, and her offense is starting to come around. Needs to be able to show that she can score away from the basket this summer.
