Continue ReadingChaparral sophomores Avery and Payton Bang are hard to tell apart but if they continue to progress at their current rate, there will be a lot of college coaches out there who would be happy with either of the Wolverines’ twin forwards.
Their recruitments are all ready picking up steam and with only one year of high school basketball under each of their belts, the twin 2022’s are simply settling in and enjoying the process.
“We’ve been in touch with coaches and the process is going really well,” Avery Bang said. “We’re hoping for a little bit more so we can keep our options open. And we both really want to find the right fit at a place that feels like family. So we’ll just keep working hard and that will all take care of itself.
“We’ve given some thought to trying to go to the same place. But I think we’ll probably end up at different schools because we’re both going to go where we feel is best.”
As a freshman last season, Avery Bang averaged 3.3 points and 3.3 rebounds for a Chaparral squad that went 15-11 and reached the 5A Sweet 16 before losing to eventual runner-up Grandview. Payton Bang averaged 4.1 points and 3.8 rebounds.
Both freshmen were buried pretty far down in a deep Wolverines rotation and saw only limited minutes. But now that they’re sophomores and the Wolverines graduated five seniors from last year’s team, both 6-foot-1 forwards will play much larger roles according to head coach Tony Speights.
“My twins are coming,” Speights said.
Both twins have been contacted by numerous coaches and recruiters, and Avery Bang already has a Division-I offer on the table from Lafayette College.
Avery Bang would like to be near a decent-sized city and Payton Bang would like to go to the east coast and end up with a program that has a unified and supportive culture. She was born in North Dakota and moved to Colorado 11 years ago, so Payton Bang added that cold weather would be a bonus.
“We’ve got a lot of people sending us letters and telling us to come to their camps,” Payton Bang said. “We actually had one coach who thought we were the same person. I’m really looking for a good, close team because at Chap we have the “Chap family” and we’re all close. I’d like to be somewhere where everybody gets along and is on the same page.
“I think we’re going to have to work really hard because we just lost our point guard and a couple of our forwards. But we’re all getting in the weight room and working hard so I think it will be interesting.”
Both Bang sisters play for Colorado Basketball Club during the grassroots season.
