Continue ReadingThe St. Mary’s girls basketball team has won Colorado’s last two Class 3A state championships and lot of the credit for that deservedly goes to current senior Josephine Howery, who was named the CHSAA 3A Player of the Year.
But the Pirates have a 52-2 record over the past two season and figure to be the early favorites to win a third state championship in 2019-20 because they’re not a one-woman show. Right next to Howery on last winter’s CHSAA all-state team sits senior Seneca Hackley, who looks primed for a big senior season and is garnering plenty of attention as Howery’s counterpart in arguably the best one-two punch in Colorado’s 3A classification.
“It’s exciting once you get towards the end of it (the recruiting process) because you kind of see where you’re at,” Hackley said. “I have some great schools interested in me. So no matter what I do, I think I’ll find the right school for me.”
Hackley has offers from Metro State, Baker University and Florida Gulf Coast, and hasn’t ruled out any new schools potentially entering the mix. She plays club basketball in the Rockies organization, for which she is the only player to ever be selected to the all-tournament teams (by opposing coaches) at all five of the team’s events, which she did this past summer.
“No other player in Rockies history ever achieved such a feat,” Rockies coach and director Johnnie Bratton said. “Seneca is tough and she is the only girl of nine children, so I smell a survivor.”
An all-around player, the 5-foot-9 Hackley averaged 13.7 points, 4.6 rebounds, 2.9 assists, 4.0 steals and nearly a block per game as a junior. Equally comfortable being used as a shooting guard or a wing, she shot 34 percent from 3-point range, 53 percent from the field and 82 percent at the free-throw line in 2018-19.
Those are solid numbers but Hackley thinks she can do better as a senior.
“I’m hoping to be more of a leader for my team,” Hackley said. “Obviously, I’d like to score more. We’re hoping to win a lot of games this year and win state again. We want to make that statement against the rest of the teams in 3A.”
Hackley also plays volleyball at St. Mary’s and is a member of the club that shows new students around school and organizes events for the high school and middle school. She has a cumulative GPA of 3.6 and a 3.9 GPA for her senior year, and scored an 1150 on the SAT.
