Falcon head coach Tarike Adams was able to do just that this past winter.
Billie Fiore, a member of the 2022 graduating class, started and played in all 25 games at point guard for the Falcons (10-15) last season. The 5-foot-7 guard even led her team to the second round of the Class 4A playoffs.
“Man, this kid is one of those special kids,” Adams said. “She’s going to be dynamic. Billie is very unselfish and she’s a hard worker. Last year, she struggled from the free-throw line and she came to me saying she wanted to get better. We just worked, worked, worked and now it’s not an issue. Any deficiency she has now is because she’s young.”
In her freshman campaign, Fiore averaged 6.4 points, 2.9 assists and 2.7 steals per game. She also has great rebounding instincts and led the team with 5.1 boards a night despite being a guard.
Her athleticism, strength and speed are still catching up to the high school level but Fiore is already a leader on the floor for the Falcons. She also doesn’t attempt many 3-point shots but still has plenty of time to develop that aspect of her game.
Long term, Adams said he thinks Fiore should wind up being a Division-II recruit if she continues to progress the way he thinks she will.
“Billie has a high basketball IQ, is extremely coachable, and will thrive in any system,” Adams said. “She is one to watch this year.”
