The Patriots are a young, up-and-coming team with a roster full of tantalizing recruits. But they need a veteran player to step up to the plate and lead them so they can put all the pieces together and be as good as they think they can be in 2019-20. The most likely player to fill that role is Qualls.
Leading the George Washington girls on a playoff run while having an even better season than she did as a junior might be the missing piece in Qualls getting an opportunity to play at the next level.
“I’ve been able to talk to a couple of coaches and a few contacted me last weekend after the (Basketball Colorado) Showcase,” Qualls said. “I thought I was really able to show my defense and that helped get some people’s attention.”
At 5-foot-4, Qualls is small. But her defense is real.
In 2018-19, Patriots’ point guard led them with an incredible 6.7 steals per game. At the Basketball Colorado and Mountain Hoops Fall Showcase last Saturday, she stood out by showing off her tenacity and quick hands while guarding each opposing team’s best player throughout the day-long tournament.
Offensively, Qualls is a strong ball handler with good court vision who can finish in the paint with either hand. She averaged 11.5 points, 3.5 assists and 3.4 rebounds per game while shooting 39 percent from the floor and 30 percent from 3-point range.
“I think we’re going to be really good this year,” Qualls said. “I’ve been working a lot on my shot and I’d like to lead us to the Coliseum.”
Qualls is certainly one of Colorado’s biggest stock risers and a name to know heading into this winter. She has no offers yet on the table, according to GW head coach Keithan Lyons, but has the ceiling of a Division-II recruit if everything goes to plan her senior year.
