The lineup this year was quite competitive, including the reigning 3A and 5A state champions as well as a good chunk of the teams expecting to be in the mix this fall. Here’s the full list:
Highlands Ranch, Arapahoe, Cherokee Trail, Pueblo West, Broomfield, George Washington Windsor, Grandview, Lakewood, Berthoud, Erie, Horizon, St. Mary’s, Ralston Valley, Cherry Creek, Brighton, Centaurus, Mountain View, CBC 14U (club), Lightning (club) and Falcon.
Here are some sleeper players who stood out the most for their respective teams.
Alex Pirog
Alex Pirog, 2022, 6-1, C, Highlands Ranch
Pirog appeared in just two games for Highlands Ranch last season but there was no hiding her at this year’s Preseason Tournament. Every bit of 6-foot-1, Pirog is growing into a force in the post and has the potential to be a terror of a shot-blocker and rebounder. She did both quite well at the early-November tune-up and Pirog showed she could be ready to play a more integral role for the Falcons this winter.
Saya Sabus, 2022, 5-9, SG/PG, Ralston Valley
Sabus is already a very productive and contributing member of the Ralston Valley basketball team but it can be easy for freshmen to be overshadowed on the state’s top teams. She averaged 10.4 points a game last season and Sabus can flat out score the ball. Sabus, who was the Mustangs’ scoring leader in five games last season, is a very physical two guard who has had to split her time between basketball and soccer, but reportedly wants to play basketball at the next level.
Breelyn Robinson, 2021, 5-7, G, Grandview
A player who spent her first two seasons in high school way down on possibly the deepest roster in Colorado, Robinson did her best to show out at the Preseason Tournament. Robinson was solid offensively but where she really shined was at the defensive end. She was great both on and off the ball and guarded the other team’s best player throughout the day, regularly coming up with steals and igniting the fast break.
Payton Kramer, 2020, 5-7, SF/SG, Windsor
Kramer received very little playing time on a 20-win Windsor team last winter in her second season on the varsity roster. Where Kramer impressed at the Preseason tournament was with her shooting ability. She hit five 3-pointers, including three in a row at one point, against Grandview in the opening round.
Cam Crispe
Sam Crispe, 2022, 6-1, PF, Arapahoe
As a freshman, Crispe led the Arapahoe girls with 4.5 rebounds and 1.3 blocks a game last season and it was easy to see why. The young 6-foot-1 power forward is a solid shot-blocker and rebounder, and uses those skills to help ignite a team with numerous talented and fast guards. At the Preseason Tournament, Crispe regularly created possessions and started the fast break for Arapahoe. She also runs the floor well and if she keeps that up, expect her scoring numbers to increase with her other skills as a sophomore.
