Thursday night, Lincoln Southwest was down big to Fremont, but a combeack that included a Katie Dilsaver 3 pointer at the buzzer gave the Silverhawks a 42-40 win. Papillion La-Vista was keyed by 23 points from Olivia Boudreau, including a school-record 7 three pointers, gave the Monarchs a cluth, 51-49 win over Millard North. Boudreau moved over 1,000 points in her career with that performance. The biggest comeback, however was Saturday, when Lincoln East roared back from a 19 point deficit in the 4th quarter to score 35 points in the last eight minutes to defeat Omaha Westside, 68-65. Charley Bovaird hit four 3’s to key the comeback for the Spartans.
THREE THINGS I LIKE:
- Class A is a slugfest, and these close games and crazy finishes will have a big say in how wild card points and match-ups for the post-season. There’s alot of season left to go, but Lincoln Pius X and Millard South continue to lead the pack, with Lincoln East and Papillion LaVista at the next tier, with North Platte throwing a wildcard into the mix.
- Congratulations to Bruning-Davenport-Shickley (BDS), as they won the annual MUDECAS tournament with a nice 47-46 victory over Falls City Sacred Heart. Regan Alfs led the Eagles with 12 points, and BDS moved up to 4th in the Class D2 wildcard standings with the tournament championship, knocking off Sterling along the way. Enison Vonderschmidt paced Sacred Heart with 22 points.
- After a bit of a slow start, the Wahoo Warriors are starting to come on, lead by Kendal Brigham‘s 16 points a night. After pushing Crete to overtime, the Warriors have won three in a row against quality opponents Omaha Mercy, Platteview and Douglas County West. You knew Coach Linda Walker was going to get the Warriors going, it was just a matter of time.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK: If you have followed Ale’jah Douglas’ career here on prepgirlshoops.com, you know that she can score . . . but no one saw this coming. Thursday night, Douglas set a Class A record with 51 points in a regular season game in an 85-83 victory over city rival Omaha Burke. Two crazy statistics about this performance; one, this game ended in regulation, so Douglas fit those 51 points into only 32 minutes. Two, the 51 points was perhaps the second most amazing statistics of the night; Douglas added SEVENTEEN steals in this contest! I have become a big fan of Douglas’ game, and she has a chance to be the state’s player of the year and leader for a young Omaha Northwest squad that no one wants to face in a district final.
GAME OF THE WEEK –> LINCOLN-OMAHA CORRIDOR: Two teams that are really familiar with each other will meet up Friday night when Omaha Westside heads out to Millard North to take on the Mustangs. Both teams had a couple of tough defeats this past weekend (see above), and both teams will be desparate to get this win on Friday night to move up in the wildcard standings and keep their squads on the right track. Westside will turn around less than 24 hours later to host 12-1 Papillion La-Vista, whom they defeated in the Metro Conference semi-finals a month ago.
GAME OF THE WEEK –> STATE-WIDE: Without a doubt, the best game of the week is Tuesday night in Hastings when Kalynn Meyer takes her 19 points and 14 rebounds a game to St. Cecilia’s to battle against the top-ranked Hawkettes. St. Cecillia’s dropped their first game in over a year to Grand Island Northwest last Tuesday, 55-50, but they bounced back with two convincing wins later in the week, including a 51-27 win over a quality Kearney Catholic squad. Should be a great match-up
