Glass not only had determination but consistency throughout the whole game and that set them apart. Amherst began to fight back after halftime, but it was not enough momentum to set them over the top, and Glass would go to win 57-37. Both teams begin district playoffs Thursday, Feb. 13.
Here are my takeaways…
Defense and consistency take the cake
Photo via E.C. Glass Girls Basketball FacebookNot only did E.C. Glass have the mindset that they wanted to win, but they kept consistent with their defense throughout the game. Pushing Amherst to keep a 37-point bay. Guard Jamiyah Henry handled the defense with ease, and Henry forced a turnover on multiple occasions. Consistency is key when it comes to playing a full game, and it looks like practice paid off this season for Glass as they went 14-0 in their district.
Sometimes the players that shine most are off the bench
Amherst county showed their strength after halftime, and they pulled a few girls off of the bench. Glass then started to receive some pushback from their opponent. Guard Holland Saunders joined forward Nadia West on the court and between the two they made four field goals and helped the team try to make a comeback. Saunders had a 100% field goal percentage this game, which attributed to the increase in her average. West made five great blocks, and that helped Amherst lessen the distance of points while West competed on the court.
Not all the greats are seniors
A big thing this game proved; you do not have to be a senior to stand out on the court. Freshman and sophomore duo, Henry and Jeriyah Osborne became an example that if you put in work, you will see results in your game. Osborne was prepared to do whatever necessary to get the ball and block. The audience saw Osborne jump through the air to block the ball and pass it to a teammate. While Henry not only had good defense under her belt but the team counted on her to make field goals. That is what makes these players great because there is great potential there and they both have more seasons to go.
Rebounds make a difference
Mya Hamlet (Photo via E.C. Glass Girls Basketball Facebook)Forward Mya Hamlet used her height to her advantage, rebounding the ball and forcing Amherst to lose possession once again. Hamlet rose her rebound percentage this game, and Hamlet looked determined to follow the ball even if it was not her shot. Once this high scorer would rebound, she would almost always take it to her hoop and score for her team. Hamlet’s rebounds made a difference for the game in favor of Glass, and without this key player, the outcome would have been different. Hamlet had a percentage of more than 60% for rebounds for this game.
Communication is key
Throughout the game, these teams displayed that communication is necessary to win. At one point, Amherst county was on the court trying to figure out who they were guarding, and by the time they figured out who their person was, it was too late, and Glass had scored. Although they had the one hiccup, that might have sealed their fate, they did not give up. They tried to push through together, but ultimately Amherst could not stop Glass from winning. Glass kept coherent communication throughout the game, and that is what set them up for success. Hamlet and Henry from Glass made it clear that communication is something that they have had to work on overtime, but through hard work and practice, they have found what works for their team.
