Derrell, Lemons hit career marks in Sand Creek’s victory
Sand Creek Junior Nikki Derell, who averages a team-high 15 points per game, scored 10 points in the No. 1-seeded Scorpions’ 51-42 win over Centaurus on Friday night. Not only did her effort push Sand Creek into the Sweet 16, a final 3-pointer late in the game propelled Derrell past the 1,000-point career scoring mark.
Teammate Kianna Lemons, also a junior, scored a game-high 15 points but also broke the Sand Creek record for steals in a single season.
Also in Friday’s game, Centaurus freshman Laura Gensert Laura Gensert 5'10" | CG Centaurus | 2023 State CO scores a game-high 16 points, shooting 7 for 15 from the field.

Shooting takes over for No. 9 Mullen in 86-42 win
Mullen junior Megan Pohs Megan Pohs 5'3" | PG Mullen | 2021 State CO caught fire against No. 24 Cheyenne Mountain as she hit 10 shots, three 3-pointers, to finish with a game-high 24 points in the big Mustangs win.
Sophomore Gracie Gallegos Gracie Gallegos 6'1" | SF Mullen | 2022 State CO wasn’t too far behind with 17 points on 7 made shots and junior Elaina Martinez Elaina Martinez 5'4" | CG Mullen | 2021 State CO chipped in 13.
Mullen advances to take on No. 8 Montrose on Tuesday.
Trio of Spartans put No. 4 Berthoud into Sweet 16

Senior forward Celsey Selland Celsey Selland 6'0" | PF Berthoud | 2020 State CO chipped in 17 points and fell one rebound shy of the double-double while fellow senior forward Emily Cavey Emily Cavey 6'0" | SF Berthoud | 2020 State CO didn’t with 15 points and 10 boards.
Berthoud moves on to host No. 13 Falcon on Tuesday.
Burg resets career high in No. 13 Falcon victory over No. 20 Greeley Central
[player_tooltip player_id="116790" first="Hannah" last="Burg"]One of the best nights on offense came down in Colorado Springs with Falcon junior guard Hannah Burg Hannah Burg 5'8" | SG Falcon | 2021 State CO going off for 29 points, besting her previous career high of 28 that she set one week ago in the season finale against Vista Ridge.
Burg went 7 for 17 from the field, including 4 made 3-pointers and an 11 for 12 night at the free throw line. The junior didn’t just score either as she chipped in 7 boards, 5 assists and 3 steals.
Simental leads all scorers in No. 2 Pueblo West blowout
Pueblo West’s [player_tooltip player_id="95017" first="Hannah" last="Simental"], left, guards against Windsor on Jan. 4, 2020.Playoffs mean go time and Pueblo West senior guard Hannah Simental Hannah Simental 5'8" | PG Pueblo West | 2020 State CO showed it with a 30-point performance in the 50-12 win against Littleton, tied for a career-high, which she had done five times now in her career.
The University of Northern Colorado commit had 19 at the break and pushed it to 24 after third quarter when she hit a buzzer-beating 3-pointer. In the fourth, she nailed a corner three and then completed an and-one to get to 30 before she was pulled out for the last six minutes of the game.
Meanwhile, the Cyclones swarmed on defense, allowing only four points at halftime and 12 overall. Simental had three steals.
Freshman Redwine dazzles in No. 15 George Washington’s last-second win
Jaida Redwine Jaida Redwine 5'8" | PG George Washington | 2023 State CO had 24 points, all coming from an 8 for 10 night beyond the arc, as the Patriots won in the final second on a free throw.
Fellow freshman Mya Cotto lined up for a potential game-winner when she was fouled with 0.4 seconds left and the game tied at 53 with No. 18 Ponderosa.
Cotto nailed the first and iced the game to send the Patriots down to Pueblo for a Sweet 16 matchup against Pueblo West.
Whitlock, defense power No. 7 Holy Family to the Sweet 16
[player_tooltip player_id="145397" first="Tyler" last="Whitlock"]Holy Family held Northridge to five total points between the second and third quarter while junior forward Tyler Whitlock Tyler Whitlock 5'11" | SF Holy Family | 2021 State CO led the way on offense with 22 points.
Whitlock knocked down 9 shots, including a couple 3-pointers, and added a 2 for 4 performance from the free throw line to get her 22.
Tigers leading scorer Alyssa Wells Alyssa Wells 5'9" | SG Holy Family | 2021 State CO went above her season average with 14 points, 12 of which came from beyond the arc with four made 3-pointers.
Blacksten’s first half leads No. 10 Air Academy to win
[player_tooltip player_id="95020" first="Kylee" last="Blacksten"]Air Academy senior Kylee Blacksten Kylee Blacksten 6'3" | SG Air Academy | 2020 State CO hit four 3-pointers and had 18 points at halftime against Palmer Ridge and finished with 25 points in the 53-35 win.
The Colorado commit hit one more 3-pointer in the second half to finish with five while junior Brooke Moss chipped in 9 points.
Air Academy will head to take on Holy Family on Tuesday.
No. 3 Green Mountain clicks on all cylinders in win over No. 30 Pueblo County
Almost everyone on the Rams’ rotation got in on the action with four players in double figures scoring, none more than junior Courtney Hank Courtney Hank 5'10" | SF Green Mountain | 2021 State CO and her 14 points.
Sophomore Avery Oaster Avery Oaster 6'0" | PF Green Mountain | 2022 State CO had 13 while sophomore Shea Murphy and senior Maddie Phillips each pitched in 10 points.
Hornets senior Erin Mauro Erin Mauro 5'6" | SG Pueblo County | 2020 State CO had 11 points to lead Pueblo County with three made 3-pointers.
Rowland gets on a roll for No. 14 Durango
Freshman Mason Rowland finished with 18 points for the Demons, 11 coming in the second half as they pulled away from No. 19 Skyview in the second half to win 43-31.
With Durango only up 14-11 at the break, Rowland kicked it into high gear and got help in the second half from senior Emma Fitzgerald with all 6 of her points coming late.
Durtsche double-double helps No. 6 Thompson Valley survive upset bid from No. 27 Mead
Four players hit double figures in points for the Eagles who were able to escape the upset bid from Mead after going into the fourth quarter up only one.
Senior Sydnee Durtsche Sydnee Durtsche 5'10" | SF Thompson Valley | 2020 State CO finished with 12 points and 10 boards while fellow senior Samantha McCrimmon led the way for the Eagles with 16 points.
Sophomore Jackie Stephenson did the damage for the Mavericks with 21 points while junior Savanna Griebling pitched in 13.
Wilson, Lacour help No. 11 Sierra blow up No. 43 Rifle
D’Nae WilsonSenior D’nae Wilson D’nae Wilson 5'4" | PG Sierra | 2020 State CO led the Stallions with 22 points while fellow senior Azaria Lacour had 17 points and 10 rebounds in the 63-33 second round win.
The Stallions forced 21 steals as they head to the Sweet 16 to take on Thompson Valley.
