Now let’s take a look at 2A, where Limon, Holyoke, Del Norte and Sanford all remained in the bid for a state title before the year unexpectedly ended.
Here’s what not to forget about them.
The elite shooting guard from Del Norte
Kendra Parra Kendra Parra 5'5" | SG Del Norte | 2020 State CO , ranked the 74th best senior in the state by Prep Girls Hoops, scored 1,949 points in her career. That’s good for 13th all-time in state history.
The 5-foot-8 shooting guard isn’t just a volume scorer, though, hitting at an efficient 52 percent this season. She also hit 48 3s at a 40-percent clip.
In her final act on a high school court, she scored 29 points on 10-of-16 shooting in a 63-46 win over Wray in the quarterfinals.
The senior leaves high school as one of the best scorers in state history. She also played soccer, volleyball and baseball, where she was named to the first team in the Southern Peaks Conference.
The standout sophomore that led Limon
Limon, the classification’s top seed, was looking for two more wins and a title a year after it dropped out of the state tournament in the Great Eight as the top seed.
The emergence of Trista Marx had the Badgers on track.
Marx averaged 10.2 points per game on 59 percent shooting, had 6.2 boards and 2.3 steals. The four-sport athlete had a career-high 25 points on 71 percent shooting and 12 rebounds in Limon’s regional championship win over Hotchkiss.
The sophomore is also a varsity athlete in softball, track and field and volleyball.
Seniors Toni Lopez and Sidney Hines averaged 9.6 and nine points, respectively, as the Badgers went 24-1 and ended on a 20-game winning streak.
The underrated prospect from Holyoke
Kristin Vieselmeyer, the 6-foot forward for the Dragons, may be a name to keep an eye out for in the state’s prospect watch list over the next two years.
After a productive freshman year, she broke out with 14 points per game on 61 percent shooting and averaged nearly 10 boards per game.
In the team’s quarterfinals win over Ignacio, she needed only five attempts from the field to net a game-high 15. She also had 13 rebounds, including a late offensive board that she turned into an easy putback to push the game out of reach.
The Sanford senior that got hot late
Mackenzie Peterson saved some of the finest performances of her career to aid Sanford’s run to the 2A Final Four.
Peterson, who upped her statistics in nearly every category from her junior year, averaged 10.9 points, 4.9 rebounds, 2.5 steals and two assists.
In the first round of its regional tournament, she scored 23 points on 10-of-16 shooting and had eight rebounds. She had another 17 points in a win over favored Heritage Christian in the region’s final.
The Indians were peaking at the right time, winning their region as a 13 seed before beating No. 3 Rye by 15 in the state quarterfinals.
