Continue ReadingMiette Veldman goes up strong for the layup.In the first round of the girls state tournament, we had a battle at Roanoke College in the Steggert Center between Region 3D Champion Lord Botetourt and Region 3C Runner-up Turner Ashby. Lord Botetourt led the entire game with their aggressive defense, causing Turner Ashbu to turn the ball over 18 times. Botetourt used those turnovers to run the floor and get easy layups in transition. Not only did TA turn the ball over, but they also struggle shooting, shooting just 21% from the floor.
Lord Botetourt was led by the Class of 2020 Miette Veldman and Taylor Robertson. Veldman is Lord Botertout’s 5′ 11 standout player, who is the school’s career leader in points with 1,795, she is also the school’s career leader in rebounding with 1,235. Veldman was in foul trouble in the first quarter and had to sit but still ended the game with 20 points, 8 rebounds, 4 steals, 3 assists and shot 12-18 from the free-throw line, in just 18 minutes of play. She is averaging a double-double throughout the season, scoring 22.9 PPG and 13.4 RPG.
Taylor Robertson pulls up for the jumper.Robertson was the second-leading scorer in the game with 15 points, including 12 rebounds, ending the night with a double-double. She shot 6-8 from the field, mostly in transition from turnovers, due to Lord Botertouts’ aggressive defense. Robertson is coming off of a season-high 26 points, in a win over Magna Vista in the Region 3C semifinal game, putting Lord Botetourt in the State Tournament.
Becca Shiflet drives to the basket.Turner Ashby’s Class of 2021 Becca Shiflet and Class of 2022 Leah Kiracofe led the way for their team, scoring 20 of the 30 total points. Becca was her teams leading scorer with 13 points, including 6 rebounds and 4 steals. She has earned first-team all-region throughout the tournament with her will to want to win and aggressive play.
Leah Kiracofe hustles for the loose ball.Leah did what she could to help, scoring 7 points, 6 rebounds, and 2 steals, but it just wasn’t enough to hold off Lord Botetourt. However, she is coming off of a 26 point performance to get them to the State Tournament and earning second-team all-region player.
