Multiple teams were able to reach the playoffs out of this county located in Eastern North Carolina, but who were the best players in the area for the 2019-20 season? Prep Girls Hoops NC presents the all-area selections for Martin County.
First team
Johnay Goddard (Riverside guard/forward, 2020)
Goddard did a little bit of everything for Riverside from scoring to rebounding and even blocking shots at a high rate. The senior guard/forward will play at NC Wesleyan College starting this winter and will be a big addition to that program. Goddard led the team in rebounds (9.0), steals (2.4) and blocked shots (1.3) per game and second in scoring at just under 14 points per game. The Knights won 20 games or more in each of her four seasons on the team.
Keary Jones (Riverside guard, 2022)
Jones made her presence felt on both ends of the floor for Riverside throughout the 2019-20 season. The Knights sophomore guard averaged 16 points and 4.5 steals per game and helped lead her team to a 20-7 record. Offensively, she attacks the basket well, gets a lot of her points in transition, and plays with incredible energy. She’ll be an even bigger part of a great girls basketball program in Riverside next year with the graduation of Goddard.
Kendal Furlough (Bear Grass Charter guard, 2022)
Bear Grass Charter had one of their best seasons since they reopened their school in 2012 and one of the biggest reasons why is the play of Furlough. The sophomore guard led the Bears in scoring at nine points per game and averaged five steals per contest as well. With all but one player returning, expect Furlough to help this team improve on their 9-13 record next season.
Emilee Perry (Bear Grass Charter guard, 2022)
Perry was the second leading scorer for the Bears this season at 6.6 points per game and led the team in rebounding (6.1 per contest). She was also tied for the most assists on team and finished with over five steals per game. Perry lives in transition and can get to the rim very well. She’s done it all for Bear Grass Charter this year and will be counted on again next season.
Trevondra Brown (South Creek forward, 2021)
Despite a tough season for South Creek, Brown was a bright spot for the team throughout the 2019-20 season. The junior forward led the area in rebounding at 10.2 per game and averaged an astounding 8.9 blocks per contest. Brown had five double doubles and all of them were with less than 10 points and at least 10 blocks and rebounds. Overall, she had 14 games with double figure rebounds and had at least six blocks in every game she played.
Second team
Jermaria Brown (Riverside guard, 2022)
Zion Jenkins (Riverside guard, 2023
Shykira Bowers (South Creek guard, 2021)
Lauren Asby (Bear Grass Charter guard, 2023)
Honesty Rodgers (Riverside forward, 2020)
