While Greene County has struggled to put up good records, the athletic talent of the girls team has greatly improved in the last few seasons. Here are the girls who had the 15 best seasons in the Wayne/Greene County area.
FIRST TEAM
MVP: Wayne Country Day freshman guard Ja’Kea Brunson
19.4 PPG, 4.4 RPG, 2.3 APG, 2.9 SPG, 48% FG, 37% 3FG, 65% FT
Stepping up to lead after being a spot up shooter her first two years on varsity, the freshman blossomed into a high-scoring point guard. As she develops, college coaches of all levels should keep track of her.
Greene Central senior guard Jaanasia Edwards
19.6 PPG, 5.1 RPG, 2.1 APG, 2.8 SPG, 33% FG, 30% 3FG, 74% FT
There aren’t many more girls in Eastern North Carolina that can fill it up like this unsigned senior. At 5-9, she has the handles to get to anywhere on the court and the jumper to punish teams.
Southern Wayne freshman wing Ta’Niyah Glaspie
7.5 PPG, 10.5 RPG, 2.9 SPG, 29% FG, 42% FT
There aren’t many players who play harder and with more energy than this freshman. At only 5-8, she managed to put up close to 11 rebounds a game. It will be interesting to see how she develops her skills.
Spring Creek senior wing Belinda Carson
11.7 PPG, 11.8 RPG, 2 APG, 3 SPG, 52% FG, 47% FT
The Lenoir Community College signee is the definition of versatility. She’s strong enough to bang down low and fast enough to play guard at 5-10.
Wayne Country Day senior post Lexi Jeffreys
13.2 PPG, 6.2 RPG, 1 APG, 1.2 SPG, 49% FG, 69% FT
The 6-2 post player decided early on that she was not going to play college basketball and balled out in her final year of organized basketball. Jeffreys ended up with All-State for the third straight year.
SECOND TEAM
Goldsboro junior guard Mary Archibald
11.8 PPG, 5.7 RPG, 4.8 APG, 3.2 SPG, 30% FG, 21% 3FG, 58% FT
Archibald was everything for the struggling Cougars. Despite not having a good record Archibald showed to be a hard nosed combo guard at 5-8 with good upside.
Southern Wayne junior guard Aleesha Boyette
9.4 PPG, 3.3 RPG, 2.3 APG, 2.8 SPG, 24% FG, 22% 3FG, 55% FT
In her first year with the Saints, Boyette paced them in scoring as she is the most explosive scorer with deep range.
C.B. Aycock junior guard Abbey Thomas
11 PPG, 11 RPG, 1.3 APG, 2.4 SPG, 1.8 BPG, 42% FG, 57% FT
The volleyball star proved to be a monster for the basketball team as she did a little bit of everything.
C.B. Aycock junior post Kaitlyn Parrish
8 PPG, 4.8 RPG, 2 APG, 1.3 SPG, 33% FG, 22% 3FG, 54% FT
Parrish is an interesting prospect as a 5-11 post with the ability to shoot the three and rebound.
Wayne Christian sophomore post Brianna Verme
15.7 PPG, 9.4 RPG, 2.1 SPG, 47% FG, 56% FT
The sophomore proved to be tough to stop in the post as she showed she could work in the post and 10-12 feet away from the basket.
THIRD TEAM
Wayne Christian sophomore guard Brittany Butts
10.8 PPG, 4.4 RPG, 2.5 APG, 4.9 SPG, 39% FG, 39% 3FG, 57% FT
Quick hands and a knockdown jump shooter, Butts should have a even better junior year.
C.B. Aycock junior guard Kaitlyn Smith
8.6 PPG, 1.7 RPG, 1.3 APG, 2.6 SPG, 29% FG, 24% 3FG, 54% FT
Smith was a key piece for the Falcons this year.
Southern Wayne junior guard Ty’lisha Maye
8.3 PPG, 2 RPG, 2.1 APG, 3.5 SPG, 21% FG, 16% 3FG, 50% FT
She’s one of the best defenders on the team and she creates shots easily.
Wayne Country Day junior guard Kimora Cox
7.1 PPG, 1.7 RPG, 1.4 APG, 1.6 SPG, 47% FG, 35% 3FG, 51% FT
Cox really improved as the season went on. She will have an even larger role next year.
Wayne Country Day senior wing Katie Strickland
6.8 PPG, 2.1 RPG, 1.6 APG, 1.7 SPG, 41% FG, 38% 3FG, 46% FT
Strickland was the glue for the Chargers as she was a scrappy rebounder and defender who could shoot the ball at a high clip.
