My hope is that it will bring a little distraction to your day and a sense of normalcy. So, I will continue to run the through the All Conference teams and review the season for some of the Southern Illinois conferences that I cover. Here we take a look at the Cahokia conference, Mississippi division.
The past 9 years Breese Central has only lost one conference game. That strangle hold on the conference title continued this year. Both games against second place Freeburg were competitive games with Breese Central winning by 12 and 8 points. There was some change in the standings as Columbia graduated a very strong class in 2019. Salem took the step forward into 3rd place this year. Here is the way it shook out:
- Breese Central – 10-0
- Freeburg – 8-2
- Salem – 6-4
- Columbia – 3-7
- Wesclin -3-7
- Carlyle – 0-10
The All Conference team consisted of the following players:
- Molly Diekemper is a 6’0 2020 Forward from Carlyle. Molly is a repeat performer on the All Conference list. She had an excellent year on a team that struggled. Molly averaged 17.4 points per game and 7.4 rebounds. She will play college volleyball but certainly had the game to play basketball had she wanted to pursue it.
- Miah Weems is a 5’9 2021 Forward from Breese Central. Miah is a repeat performer on the All Conference list. She has a nice outside shot that she can hit out to the 3-point line. Miah has good strength to her body that she can also use in getting to the rim. Miah averaged 8.6 points per game on a very balanced team.
- Chloe Book is a 5’7 2021 Point Guard from Breese Central. Chloe is also a repeat performer on the All Conference list. Chloe excels on the defensive end where she uses her athletic ability to guard anyone on the floor. She is quick and strong which she uses well on the offensive end too. Chloe was second in scoring on a balanced team at 7.6 per game.
- Ellie Eichenlaub is a 6’0 2020 Post from Freeburg. Ellie is a smooth left handed post player that was second is scoring and first in rebounding for a very well rounded team. She is smooth around the basket and does a good job defending the paint on defense, including blocking 1.6 shots per game.
- Haley Kimes is a 5’5 2020 Point Guard from Freeburg. Haley is a traditional point guard that can lead her team on both ends of the floor. She did a great job on defense including setting a school record with 15 steals in one game. She averaged 4.3 steals and 3.4 assists per game. Haley scored 7.8 points per game as a part of a balanced attack.
- Maddy Schwemmer is a 5’8 2022 Wing from Freeburg. Maddy stepped into a big role in her starting spot as a sophomore. She led the team in scoring showing off her expertise as a 3-point sniper. Maddy is also capable of getting to the basket and finishing through contact. She averaged 10 points per game and made 73 3-pointers on the season.
- Lacey Jones is a 5’9 2020 Guard from Salem. Lacey was the leader on and off the court for her squad. She has made great strides in her game over her career at Salem. Lacey scored 8 points per game on 40% from the field and 71% from the free throw line.
- Taylor Gillett is a 5’9 2020 Forward from Salem. Taylor did an excellent job this year as the best defender on the team. She is a left handed undersized inside player that really got everything out of her size by effort and desire. Taylor scored 6 points per game and got 7 rebounds per game to help her team to the third place finish.
- McKenzie Hancock is a 5’10 2020 Forward from Wesclin. McKenzie had a good senior season where she averaged 12 points and 9 rebounds per game. She is tough inside and does a good job of getting good position to score. McKenzie pulled down over 3 offensive boards per game which showed her heart and allowed her to get easy baskets from that effort.
- Taylor Holten is a 5’10 2022 Forward from Columbia. Taylor is a strong inside player that uses her body and effort to get deep post position in the lane. She is good at finishing with either hand and really stepped up throughout the season. Taylor led the team in rebounds and points per game. She is poised to have a good last two years at Columbia.
This was another strong season for Breese Central at the top of the conference. With standout Juniors Book and Weems coming back next year they will look to continue the streak. Freeburg lost a strong senior class but returns Schweemer and a host of 2023 kids that saw varsity action, so they will look to derail the Central train.
