But don’t sleep on their talent which doesn’t care about any of the above things as coaches always say” if you can play you can play and we will find you” so here are some players you have not heard of yet but you will as their talent can’t be hidden.
Zaire Jones- Freshman- Forward- Oak Grove High School
It will not take long for people who don’t know this player to see why I feel she will be making headlines soon. As a freshman she was able to help lead her team into the conference tournament finals game and what makes this unique is the team was the 7th seed. She plays hard every play and her skill set has already developed into something special. Her solid build allows her to play physical and use her athletic skills to score in close which she did to the tune of 9 points per game and rebound which she did to the tune of 7 rebounds per game solid numbers for a 1st-year player. Time is on her side and as she gains more experience and matures the expectations of this player should be high and that should equate to a lot of interest at the next level when that time comes.
Abigail Rice- Freshman- 5’8”- Forward- RJ Reynolds High School
The best thing one can ask for when a freshman joins their team is that they are sound fundamentally and this player is that and more. She is one of those players that got better each practice each game and each day which saw her playing her best basketball at the end of the season. This shows she works hard and is starting to understand the game at this level all things that will bode well for her future. Her freshman stats of 6 points and 5 rebounds a game shows she has the necessary skills and she learned a lot in this her first year. Her skills are ahead of where you would expect a freshman to be that is why I expect her to be a player we hear more and more about as her high school career advances.
Regan Fowler- Freshman- 5’8”- Guard- Forsyth Home Educators
Playing at a small school in a little unknown conference sometime minimizes exposure but when your talents demand attention then that is what you will get and this player is another one from this school that demands this attention. She has the perfect physical tools to be successful especially at the guard position where her size allows her to pass and shoot over smaller guards and her athleticism allows to guard both guard position with ease. Her guard skills are good especially for a young guard and as they continue to improve so will her game and her stock. What really impresses is her ability to rebound from the guard spot which led to her having some double double games which can’t be ignored as well as her 6 points and 6 rebound a game averages. She will need to get out and play against better competition for her game to really be tested and improve and as this happens she will come out of the shadows and be a top player in this area as her career continues.
Lydia Couillard- Freshman- 6’3”- Center- High Point Christian Academy
One of the old basketball sayings that is still as still true today as it was when it first was stated is “as a coach the one thing you can not teach is height”, either a player has it or not. With that in mind this next player is one of the tallest in the area as a freshman as she stands at 6’3”. Her skills are improving as she learns to play at this height and at this level and learns what she can do and what she needs to improve. From watching her play one can tell she is working hard on her game and that will assure that she will get better. She already has good hands and has developed a good post-game as she learns to use her height and size and she is beginning to realize the effect she can have in the paint both as a shot-blocker and rebounder as well as a scorer. Her talents are raw and developing but trust me her work ethic is enough to make sure she will improve each year and with her physical tools, she is one to watch and believe me when I say college coaches know the importance of having a solid post player with height and size patrolling the lane for their teams so she will be on a lot of teams radar.
Chelsie Powe- Freshman- 5’7”- Guard- Dudley High School
When your team is a dominant force not only in the area or conference but in the state and a constant 20 plus win program and who is a regular in the state playoffs, to gain a spot on that team is something that is so much more difficult with the talent on the team. The only freshman on this team roster this year says a lot about her as talents as a player. She is athletic with the skills to guard many positions and her guard skills are sound fundamentally and improving every day. What impresses most is that even with limited game time she is working her behind off in practice to get better every day and it shows in the progress from day one to the end of the season. It is so hard for a young player that has had success at other levels to all of a sudden be on a team with limited if any game time to accept that role and remain confident but she has done that and with her abilities in transition to finish at the rim and pass and her improving shooting stroke coupled with her defensive talents she is going to be another quality player from this quality program and when her time comes she will be more than ready.
