Some are finishing up their high school careers and others are starting their careers so this is a great mix of players but what they all have in common is their love for the game of basketball and the success they have had.
Sadie Nester- Senior- 5’7”- Guard/Forward- McMichael High School/Methodist University
When seniors become seniors they are expected to be team leaders and to lead by example and this player did that better than most. Her ability to run the team from the guard position not only allowed the team to be competitive but allowed her to show off her basketball skills. She excels in transition with the ball in her hands where she makes the correct decision more often than not and can either finish herself or find open teammates. Her ball-handling ability allows her to get into the lane and finish around the basket or set up her shooters or post players for easy looks. Adding to these skills is her shooting touch which she exhibits as a knockdown 3 point shooter or off the dribble. Her offensive skills allowed her to average 13 points and 3 rebounds a game. With the skills and leadership talents, she demonstrated it is easy to see why she was signed to continue her basketball next year at the next level where she will no doubt excel.
Faith Robertson- Freshman- 5’3”- Guard- McMichael High School
This freshman was the beneficiary of being able to learn from a senior guard while improving her skills and having the opportunity to play a lot of minutes as a freshman and to gain that oh so valuable experience that will bode her well heading into the rest of her high school career. While learning she was able to use her already developed skills which include excelling in the open court where she is sneaky quick with the ball from one end to the other and she has learned at an early age to keep her head up and this allows her to see the whole floor and make great decisions whether for herself or her teammates. Her ball handling is advanced and she is able to get in the lane to negotiate in the half-court and get in the lane at will to create plays. She also has developed a nice outside shot and is an adequate standstill 3 point shooter. Her skills enabled her to average 10 points, 7 assists, and 2 steals per game which are great numbers for a freshman. She is a tough guard that does not allow her height to dictate to her and she will continue to develop and lead her team during the rest of her high school career.
Janika Millner- Senior-5’5”- Guard- Morehead High School
She was a great player on a team that did not win a lot of games but that did not take away from what she was able to accomplish. As an athletic guard that shines in the open court with her ability to finish at the rim and can also shoot off the dribble. She also possesses a solid outside shot and is a deadly standstill 3 point shooter when left open. Her offensive skills led her to average 16 points and 4 assists per game but she also was a solid defender with quick feet and hands which allowed her to average 2 steals per game. Though these skills will be missed next year what her team will miss most is her work ethic and leadership.
Taylor Haynes- Junior- 5’9”- Guard/Forward- Northern Guilford High School
As a player on one of the powerhouse programs over that last few years she was the recipient of a winning culture and a program that has produced many college players. Her skills have been groomed there and she has improved her skills each year. She has the ability to play both the guard and forward position on both ends of the floor which makes her a valuable weapon for a team that had another 20 plus win season and a berth in the state playoffs. What is most impressive about her is her knowledge of the game and basketball IQ, she seems to make excellent decisions and few mistakes. Solid ball-handling skills allow her to rebound and lead the break and finish or dish off to open teammates, she also is a lethal standstill 3 point shooter. On a very good team she was able to average 10 points a game and expect that to increase next season. Her other role on the team was to be a good defender and she was able to guard multiple positions with ease and use her instincts to get in passing lanes for deflections and steals. I expect her to be one of the team leaders next year and to elevate her skills as a senior and attract the interest of schools at the next level.
Jadyn Newsome- Freshman- 5’10”- Forward- Northern Guilford High School
The skillset you must possess to come into a top-ranked program as a freshman and not only make the team but to play minutes and be a vital contributor shows you are a special player. That was the case here as she was able to play her way into the rotation with her talent to score in the post with soft hands and good footwork along with the ability to step out and make the mid-range jumper. Even with her slight build she played tough in the lane and used her skills and smarts to score at 12 points per game average and rebound at a 4.5 per game average. What really impresses with her is her poise and feel for the game at such an early age it speaks volume to her preparation and hard work in the offseason and this has prepared her for where she is now. Now with her fundamentals solid she is just going to improve and get better and as she matures and gets stronger she will be a force to reckon with for the next three years.
