Emily Cavey commits to Tarleton State University
Emily Cavey Emily Cavey 6'0" | SF Berthoud | 2020 State CO ’s recruiting journey has followed an unusual trajectory, marked by early highs and unexpected lows, but the Berthoud High small forward eventually made her way back to the top.
After rebounding beautifully as a senior in 2019-20 following an injury-shortened junior season, Cavey announced on Thursday that she has committed to play basketball at Tarleton State University in Stephenville, Texas. A dream of playing Division-I basketball that was at one point in question is now solidified.
“When it came down to making the decision, it was based off area, coach, the players and also my gut feeling,” Cavey said. “The coaches are amazing and gave me a good look at where I stand. I was also able to Zoom call with the girls, which was key since I couldn’t go on an official visit. They made the decision easier.”

As a sophomore, Cavey averaged 19.6 points, 7.8 rebounds, two assists and three steals per game on her way to being named Loveland Reporter-Herald Player of the Year among other accolades. She had multiple Division-I offers heading into her junior season but injuries limited her to just 11 games in 2018-19.
Cavey returned as a senior this past winter and averaged 17.2 points, 6.9 rebounds, 2.6 assists and three steals while leading the Spartans to the Class 4A Final Four. The six-foot senior was named player of the year by the Tri-Valley League and Report-Herald, and finished her prep career with 1,477 points, 608 rebounds, 186 assists and 206 steals in 88 career games.

“I’m really excited about it,” Cavey said. “I think it’ll be a good opportunity. I think it’s just somewhere I can figure out if Division I is a level I can play at. I think I can and I’m exciting to get going.”
Cavey was considering Colorado Mesa and Angelo State before making her final decision. Prior to Thursday’s announcement, Cavey (No. 14) was the highest ranked player in the Prep Girls Hoops Colorado Class of 2020 rankings.
“It’s a great fit for Emily, both as a basketball player and a student,” Berthoud head coach Alan Gibson said. “Moving into Division I and the WAC next year, and the fact that Tarleton’s system is very similar to ours at Berthoud, makes for an exciting opportunity for her. Academically, she is interested in both physical therapy and agriculture, and Tarleton has outstanding programs in both of those areas. We are so excited for her and can’t wait to see her transition to college basketball.”
