Plenty of people are starting to take notice and this past week, Guevara received her first official Division-I offer from the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff. If Guevara she keeps doing what she been doing, there are surely more to come.
“I’ve been hearing from some schools,” Guevara said. “It’s definitely a relief to have an offer. I just want to play and experience college basketball.”
[player_tooltip player_id="116758" first="Timiya" last="Guevara"]Currently No. 12 in the Prep Girls Hoops Colorado player rankings for the Class of 2021, Guevara has long been a talented scorer, averaging 19.5 points over the 73 games she has played in high school to date. She has a total of 1,420 career points to her credit and has also averaged 6.3 assists, 5.1 rebounds and 4.6 steals per game during her time at Denver South.
Leading the way to the tune of 22 points a night throughout her junior season, Guevara, who plays club ball for the Colorado Hawks, led a young and up-and-coming Denver South team to a 19-5 record and a Denver Prep League title in 2019-20. The 5-foot-4 point guard scored 20 or more points in 16 of the Rebels’ 26 games as a junior and also averaged 6.3 assists, 5.8 rebounds and 5.8 steals.
Considering what the Rebels accomplished with five freshmen on their roster last season, Guevara and her teammates are excited for what they might be capable of next winter.
“Overall, I think the season went really well,” Guevara said. “That’s probably our best run we’ve had since I’ve been at South. We did really well for a team with a lot of freshmen but we’re not satisfied. I’m really looking forward to next season.”
Denver South head coach Wayne McDonald, who overcame a prolonged battle with COVID-19 in April, said he is confident that Guevara will have plenty of options when it comes time to make her college decision.
“She has the heart of a lion and she’s a tough girl,” McDonald said. “When her back is against the wall and others don’t believe in her, she believes in herself. You can’t tell her that she can’t do something because she’ll just prove you wrong. She can play the game. It just comes down to what a team is looking for.”
