Continue ReadingLast week was a big one for NoCo Triple Threat Basketball, which hit the road for a Midwest swing to get some much-needed grassroots competition.
Between the USJN and Nike Tournament of Champions events in Indiana, the Triple Threat Elite 2023 squad posted a 10-2 overall record. They went 6-0 and won the Nike TOC, defeating Tennessee Blazers, 47-45, in the championship game, showing that their group has some of the top young talent in Colorado.
We caught up with the Triple Threat staff to find out which players were the driving forces behind the successful week and how they stood out.
Point guards Delaney Matkin Delaney Matkin 5'6" | PG Rocky Mountain | 2023 State CO (Rocky Mountain) and Sam Darnell (Windsor) reportedly did an excellent job of running the point position, creating open shots and scoring opportunities for their teammates. Matkin, and up-and-coming guard with good ball skills, averaged eight points per game for her high school varsity team while shooting 32 percent (43 for 134) from behind the 3-point arc.
Forwards Sabrina Harsh (Scottsbluff, Neb.), Abby Saville Abby Saville 5'9" | PF Rocky Mountain | 2023 State CO (Rocky Mountain), Miranda Wiedeman Miranda Wiedeman 5'10" | PF University | 2023 State CO (University) and Kate Davis Kate Davis 5'9" | SF Fossil Ridge | 2023 State CO (Fossil Ridge) were strong in the post. All four players created different opportunities either scoring, blocking shots or, especially in Davis’ case, stepping out to hit some key shots. Wiedeman averaged 6.8 points and 6.8 rebounds a night for her high school team in 2019-20.
When it came to scoring, Payton Burda (Scottsbluff, Neb.) and Matkin led the way and shot the ball well from 3-point range. Head coach Todd Matkin said Bella Schilling Bella Schilling 5'6" | CG Fossil Ridge | 2023 State CO (Fossil Ridge) did an awesome job of hitting some key shots and giving the team easy transition baskets. Bree Bunting Bree Bunting 5'8" | CG Platte Valley | 2023 State CO (Platte Valley), who averaged 9.5 points and 5.6 rebounds for her high school team as a freshman, was great when it came to finishing on drives and hit a number of key pull-up jump shots.
Defensively, Karsyn Huss (Caliche, 2024), Schilling, Darnell and Bunting were all over the place, creating steals and easy scoring chances for Triple Threat.
