Gehlen Catholic Jays
15-10 last year
58.3 points scored, 52.0 points against
8 returning players

The Jays are always a tough out, as evidence by their 44 wins over the past three seasons. Gehlen Catholic found its groove late in the season, making a run to the Class 1A state tournament in Des Moines before falling to Bellevue Marquette. Just eight players return from that team, though, as seven key seniors departed. [player_tooltip player_id="129063" first="Lauren" last="Heying"], a junior, and [player_tooltip player_id="131215" first="Rachel" last="Langel"], a senior, take over as team leaders. Langel led the team with 178 total rebounds and Heying knocked down 17 three-pointers.

Notable returners:

[player_tooltip player_id="129063" first="Lauren" last="Heying"] - 12.0 PPG, 3.8 RPG, 2.1 SPG

19-4 last year
61.5 points scored, 40.9 points against
14 returning players

The Tigers have reeled off 11 consecutive seasons of at least 10 wins on the hardwood, including 19 last year. That was the most since the 2011-12 team went 21-3. Gilbert rode that to the Class 4A state tournament before they fell to Glenwood in a thriller, 89-75. The Tigers should be right in the thick of contention again with the return of leading scorer Ava Hawthrone. As a sophomore, Hawthorne averaged almost 17 points per game and four assists, shooting 50 percent from the field. [player_tooltip player_id="164934" first="Emma" last="Bulman"], who led the Tigers in rebounding with 148 boards, is also back for her senior season.
