The surefire player of the game, Ja’Kea Brunson Ja’Kea Brunson 5'9" | PG Wayne Country Day | 2023 NC is one of the newest members of the Prep Girls Hoops NC 2023 watch list. Her first game a sophomore didn’t disappoint as she poured in 29 points to lead all scorers for a Chargers team that’s poised to make another deep playoff run. Brunson showed improvement in her ability to hit catch-and-shoot three pointers, knocked down a few jumpers off the dribble, and attacked the basket at will. Cape Fear Christian didn’t have an answer for her as will most of the teams that will see this standout 2023 point guard. Expect her to have another great season for Wayne Country Day.
Kimora Cox Kimora Cox 5'5" | SG Wayne Country Day | 2022 NC (2022 guard, Wayne Country Day)
A candidate to have a breakout junior season, Kimora Cox Kimora Cox 5'5" | SG Wayne Country Day | 2022 NC had 19 points and 10 steals in the Chargers’ season opener. The junior combo guard was mostly a defensive dynamo last season for a team that reached the final four in the NCISAA 2-A division. With the graduation of a few key starters, Cox will have to be an offensive juggernaut for Wayne Country Day this year and this was an excellent start. She’s a knockdown shooter who has improved her mid-range game.
Carleigh Greiman (2021 forward, Wayne Country Day)
2021 forward Carleigh Greiman could be the biggest key to Wayne Country Day’s chances at winning the state championship. She provided a big spark scoring 14 points and was a huge presence on both ends of the floor from shot blocking to rebounding and scoring in transition. Expect her to see big minutes this season with the graduation of several key post players from a year ago.
Gracie Byrd (2022 forward, Cape Fear Christian)
Byrd is off to a great start this season for Cape Fear Christian scoring 22 in their season opening win over Berean Baptist and 13 against Wayne Country Day. She’s going to be one of the top scorers in Harnett County this season and it could help the Eagles win a bunch of games. Byrd is their top scorer through two games and expect her to continue her scoring outburst in the upcoming matchups ahead.
