Several programs have improved after reaching the state playoffs during the 2019-20 season. What’s in store for this GNRC slate during 2021? Prep Girls Hoops NC previews the top players and teams from this league.
Clayton
After finishing tied for first in the conference standings last year, Clayton will be back in the title hunt this season. They’re led by one of the top 2023 prospects in North Carolina: 6’1″ wing/forward Darrionna Howard Darrionna Howard 6'1" | PF Clayton | 2023 State NC . The Comets also have 2021 standouts Alexia Watkins and Delaney Eaves returning to the lineup this year. Expect Clayton to be one of the top contenders in the GNRC.
East Wake
The team Clayton shared first place with was East Wake thanks to a 9-1 conference record. They graduated one of their top players from last years squad, but still have a lot of contributors returning. Sierra Razor and Ze’Asia Gupton are two 2021 prospects that’ll shoulder the scoring load this season for the Warriors.
Cleveland
Led by 2023 guards Sage Farmer Sage Farmer 5'6" | PG Cleveland | 2023 NC and Brooklynn Waller Brooklynn Waller 5'7" | CG Cleveland | 2023 NC , the Rams should have a much improved 2021 season. Cleveland has a chance to make the next step this year as long as this excellent guard tandem can produce at a high level like they did in 2020. Add 2021 forward Alisha Lucas and 2024 guard Allison Jones to the mix and the Rams return their top three scorers from the previous campaign.
Smithfield-Selma
Smithfield-Selma had a very good season last year and are looking for an encore in 2021. They’ve got a couple of prospects that can fill it up including 2021 prospects Khaliyah Peacock and Zniah Thaggard. The Spartans look to be a player in what should be a tight conference battle.
South Johnston
The Trojans are looking to rebound after struggling to get anything going last season in the GNRC. They’ll be looking to Janay McDonald, a 2021 prospect who can really score the basketball. Expect the Trojans to improve as the season progresses.
West Johnston
The Wildcats are a team that has consistent been in the playoffs or close to it over the last couple of seasons. With their leading scorer now gone due to graduation, West Johnston has a big hole to fill. 2022 guard Chassidy McDougald and 2021 forward Cheyenne Commings will lead the way for a Wildcats team looking to finish with a winning conference record this season after going 4-6 last year.
