Zoey Ward Zoey Ward 5'11" | CG Concord Academy | 2023 State NC (Concord Academy) was dominant in her performance against Metrolina Christian Academy. She is a tall guard who knows how to handle the ball. She moved with ease from end to end scoring on fast break opportunities showing that she can do it all herself if she has to. She certainly finds ways to get assists with finding her teammates open in order for them to score. On defense, she did a great job making it difficult for guards to get around her. She would seemingly come out of nowhere following a shot to grab a rebound. She was putting the team on her back making sure her opponent knew her team wasn’t going away with her shooting from behind the arc. She was responsible for bringing her team back for the win. She finished with 38 points.
Olivia Boyce (Carmel Christian) looked to take over the game for her team. She was driving the ball against any kind of contact including making some old fashioned three point plays. She also showed her ability to shoot from many areas of the court. She was consistently one of the first ones down the court hoping to score in transition. Additionally, she was aggressive on defense finding ways to stop the opposing offense by grabbing steals and causing deflections. She followed shots as well making sure her team came down with the rebound.
Mckenzie Taylor (Concord Academy) runs the floor well making sure she is there for some fast break opportunities. She can drive the ball against any opponent and does a nice job finding the open spots to pull up for her jump shot. She had a nice old fashioned three point play down the stretch that helped cut into the lead for Metrolina Christian Academy. Her passes into her teammates were well timed and placed. She finished with 14 points including important free throw points down the stretch of the game to maintain the lead.
Mayes Fisher (Charlotte Latin) was tasked with guarding the opposing team’s best player, and it was very apparent why. She made it difficult for the players to get by her, and she was constantly putting pressure on her opponents making them feel rattled when trying to get a play going. Her steals in the fourth quarter made it difficult for the opponents to cut into her team’s lead in any way. She followed the shots in order to grab rebounds for her team. She didn’t necessarily need to follow her three point shots as she showed those off, too.
