South Florida lost some very good shooters to graduation this season. Westminster Academy’s [player_tooltip player_id="91499" first="Emma" last="Wallhoff"] (91 3ptm), Doral Academy’s Anaira Ayala (73 3ptm), and Dr. Krop’s [player_tooltip player_id="91510" first="Lindsey" last="Weingard"] (66 3ptm) are just some examples. All three finished in the top 13 in perimeter makes in the state of Florida. So who are some of the best shooters in the area coming back next season? The following players can provide instant offense to their respective teams. Here are my picks... [player_tooltip player_id="243907" first="Ashley" last="Martinez"] - Somerest Academy Silver Palms Expect [player_tooltip player_id="243907" first="Ashley" last="Martinez"] to be on this list for a long time. Unlike the names above, Martinez is in the Class of 2026. The 5-foot-5 guard went 36-of-71 (36 percent) from deep last season. Moreover, Martinez shot 40 percent or better from the perimeter in a dozen games. Against Miami Country Day, she scored 17 points and went 5-of-9 from behind the arc. I only counted two games where she didn’t record a 3-pointer. Therefore, Martinez plays with the shooting confidence of a junior or senior. She is only going to get better with a ton of time ahead of her. [player_tooltip player_id="91586" first="Aly" last="Avrach"] - Spanish River 2022 [player_tooltip player_id="91586" first="Aly" last="Avrach"] is one of the best shooters in Palm Beach County. The 5-foot-8 team captain shot 51-of-129 (40 percent) from the perimeter last season. Moreover, Avrach shot 33 percent or better from deep in 12 of 15 games. That just goes to show her reliability and accuracy to score from long range. Against Palm Beach Lakes, Avrach scored 33 points and went 7-of-11 from the perimeter. She also scored a season-high 34 points and knocked down eight 3-pointers against Leonard. It is impressive she connects at such a high rate while shooting at a high volume. Many other players don't as well with that many attempts. Overall, Avrach averaged 21.5 points per game for the Sharks. Spanish River is in good position for a big season with her ability to hit big shots. [player_tooltip player_id="91557" first="Sydney" last="Shaw"] - American Heritage (Plantation) 2022 [player_tooltip player_id="91557" first="Sydney" last="Shaw"] is one of the best overall players in the state. In fact, I would want the 5-foot-6 point guard taking any shot to win a basketball game. Shaw helped the Patriots to a 25-2 overall record and a Class 5A state championship. On the floor, she went 61-of-130 (47 percent) from deep. In addition, Shaw shot 50 percent overall from the field. You could say she was as automatic as any player in the region from the floor. Her quickness to get off a shot is tough to stop. Shaw averaged 16.7 points per game and is a future D-1 superstar. [player_tooltip player_id="219925" first="Janessa" last="Kelley"]- Blanche Ely 2024 [player_tooltip player_id="219925" first="Janessa" last="Kelley"] appears to be the next great star for the Lady Tigers. The 5-foot-9 guard helped her team to a 18-2 overall record last season. While having good size at the position; Kelley is also a solid shooter. The rising sophomore went 50-of-140 (36 percent) from deep last season. In addition, Kelley’s length gives her a natural advantage to score over her defender. While averaging just over 12 points per game; Kelley hit three or more 3-pointers in ten contests. She will only get better and be a tough guard with a little more consistency. For any South Florida Prep Hoops news or information...please contact Michael Costeines @Steins_23 on Instagram or follow him on Twitter @Mungertown_Mike23.
