Those that made the trip out to Riverview Park for the SCBCA Summer Showcase were treated to at least one if not two days of exciting basketball. Prep Girls Hoops was at the North Augusta venue for an earlier event that took place this offseason when A1 Hoops League hosted one of its travel sessions in mid-May. This time, plenty of South Carolina’s best players were on hand representing their high school teams. Among those that showed up and showed out at the Summer Showcase was the class of 2023. Here is at those who did just that in North Augusta. [player_tooltip player_id="175346" first="Dy’Neka" last="Roberts"] – Denmark-Olar HS – Dy’Neka continues to display how dynamic a player she is. Roberts is active at all time whenever she takes the court. She is an extremely proficient rebounder and will find ways to score – whether it is in the open floor or when she is near the rim, where she can make tough shots. She is very skilled at coming away with steals and knows when to attempt shots and when to pass. Roberts will manage her share of shot blocks as well. Coach Terence Jones’ Vikings team advanced to within one game of the Class A Upper State Finals last season. With Roberts as one of Denmark-Olar’s signature players, expectations will once again be high. [player_tooltip player_id="247776" first="Adrian" last="Frye"] – Gray Collegiate Academy – We at Prep Girls Hoops remembers seeing Frye on the travel circuit at a couple of travel events earlier in the offseason with IDreams. A proficient scorer, Frye knows how to put the ball through the hoop regardless of where on the floor she is. She will attack the basket – either through a number of defenders or when she is running a fast break in the transition game. Frye will also take and make shots from behind the arc. She plays the game with a high basketball IQ as she is constantly aware of where she is and how she can make things happen on either offense or defense. Frye will also get in a good number of rebounds and assists. [player_tooltip player_id="198126" first="Korletta" last="Daniels"] – Westwood HS – Daniels is an ex-Cavalier that turned Redhawk starting with this past season coming off a tenure with Richland Northeast. She displays versatility in while she is primarily a point guard, Daniels can also find time at the forward position. Getting to the basket is a central part of her game on offense, whether that is in a half court set or in transition. Daniels will also come at teams with hard defense as she can at times particularly display near the rim. She also is gifted at collecting rebounds in addition to coming up with steals. [player_tooltip player_id="185432" first="Raven" last="Johnson"] – Westwood HS – Speaking of Redhawks 2023s … coach Gregory Bauldrick’s Redhawks are poised for a lot of success over the next few seasons given its 2021-22 rendition for now is slated to feature only one senior. Johnson is one of those juniors and currently the only Westwood player listed at six feet or more. Tall she is and she is also one to draw contact and find her way to get to the free throw line. Johnson knows how to receive passes and will convert on high-percentage shot chances near the rim. A midrange jumper is also part of her offensive skills and she can also give teams perimeter defense. [player_tooltip player_id="299567" first="Layla" last="Parker"] – Westwood HS – Speaking of even more Redhawks 2023s … the frontcourt for the Redhawks is a force to be reckoned with and Parker stands among that frontcourt. Even with that, she will add to a team’s defensive efforts on the perimeter. She will go after rebounds and is able to make heads up defensive plays. A good bit of those heads up defensive plays are steals that will go the other way. Parker is effective at being able to make plays in the low post and can complete shots near the rim with either her left or right hand. Makayla Watkins – Timberland HS – One can see Watkins on the court either for Timberland or with Team USC Unleashed on the travel circuit. She will manage to get open and call for the ball to make plays in the low post – which on defense could be blocked shots. Watkins will make free throws after she absorbs the contact which places her at the free throw line. If an opposing player misses a shot, Watkins will typically be right there to corral the rebound. If a miss comes from one of her own Wolves teammates, she will typically be right there to corral the rebound and get the put-back.
