We have reached the time in the basketball calendar for preseason superlatives. The Miami area is packed with talented players from all classes. Therefore, this is not an easy list to select!
Here are my picks…
[player_tooltip player_id="217667" first="Kayla" last="Nelms"] – Miami Country Day
2024 [player_tooltip player_id="217667" first="Kayla" last="Nelms"] is a rising star in the world of South Florida hoops. The 6-foot power forward can score and defend with her back to the basket. Combine that with her frame and she can simply dominate around the paint. Keep an eye out for her around the perimeter as well. Nelms shot 46 percent from beyond the arc while averaging 11.4 points per game last season. Nelms is just a nightmare to match up with. She is one of the highest rated players at any position in the state.
[player_tooltip player_id="91640" first="Emily" last="Montes"] – Palmer Trinity
2023 [player_tooltip player_id="91640" first="Emily" last="Montes"] is one of the best pure players in South Florida. The 5-foot-10 guard averaged 15.8 points, 5.8 rebounds, 3.9 assists and 1.4 blocks per game last season. Moreover, she scored in double-figures in all 19 games played. You can simply count on her game in and game out. Montes’ athleticism and length in the backcourt is tough to beat.
[player_tooltip player_id="91642" first="Kristina" last="Godfrey"] – Miami Country Day
2023 [player_tooltip player_id="91642" first="Kristina" last="Godfrey"] can score and dish with consistency for 32 minutes. The 5-foot-9 Godfrey averaged 10.7 points and 6.6 assists per game last season. While solid on offense, she can defend as well. Godfrey averaged 3.1 steals per game. When you take everything into account, Godfrey is one of the best at her position. Her best basketball is well ahead of her.
[player_tooltip player_id="243924" first="Rhema" last="Collins"] – Schoolhouse Prep
2023 [player_tooltip player_id="243924" first="Rhema" last="Collins"] is a dominant prospect for the Wolfpack. As a sophomore, the 6-foot-2 forward averaged 14.1 points and 5.1 rebounds per game. Collins’ athleticism off the wing can make her a problem for opponents. Furthermore, her natural vertical gives her an advantage in these and other situations. She holds offers from Auburn, Southern Miss, FAU, Georgia Tech, Houston, Mississippi State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Virginia Tech, St. Johns and West Virgina. UPDATE: [player_tooltip player_id="243924" first="Rhema" last="Collins"] has since transferred to Webb School in Tennessee.
[player_tooltip player_id="219927" first="Ka’Zariah" last="Johnson"] – Miami Norland
There is so much to like in regards to 2024 [player_tooltip player_id="219927" first="Ka’Zariah" last="Johnson"]. The 6-foot-2 forward is solid on the defensive front with her natural length. Johnson grabbed 9.6 rebounds and blocked two shots per game as a freshman. Her offensive game continues to improve and should result in a double-digit average as a sophomore. Johnson has plenty of potential moving forward.
