I stopped by Westminster Academy to watch the Lions take on Chaminade-Madonna. The home squad won 75-8. Westminster Academy moved the ball well and often beat Chaminade-Madonna down the floor. The Lions’ buckets in transition were high. You simply cannot allow a talented team like Westminster Academy to get free looks at the rim.
First impressions:
I thought Aylana Mergilles played really well out of the gate. The 5-foot-10 guard/forward scored a couple of baskets and played tough defense. Moreover, Mergilles used her length to create steals off inbound passes and to stop dribble penetration. She is a versatile player that runs the floor well for her size. Mergilles finished with eight points.
[player_tooltip player_id="151173" first="Claire" last="Erickson"] finished with a game-high 22 points and knocked down five 3-pointers. The 5-foot-6 guard found success shooting the ball from the top of the key. Erickson played with good tempo and facilitated well. She is one of the better all-around players on the team. Erickson will be a big key to the Lions’ final record this season.
2025 [player_tooltip player_id="243895" first="Lena" last="Girardi"] was already a great player for Westminster Academy. The 6-foot forward averaged nearly 13 points and eight rebounds per game as an eight grader. Against the Lions, Girardi finished with 14 points and scored a handful of buckets on lay-ins near the basket. For whatever reason, she slipped behind the Chaminade-Madonna defense one too many times. Girardi has too much length and skill to leave uncontested like that.
2023 [player_tooltip player_id="243925" first="Taelyn" last="Carey"] might be the most athletic player on the team. The 6-foot-2 forward was lethal in transition with the basketball in her hands. Therefore, she can be quite dangerous in the open court while attacking the basket. While hitting a few shots inside 12 feet, I think Carey would have liked to have finished with a few more buckets. I think her efficiency is where she could take the next step.
2025 [player_tooltip player_id="243902" first="Maddie" last="Wallhoff"] knocked down three 3-pointers and finished with eleven points. She is now only 578 3-pointers away from matching her sisters record. 2021 and current Southern Mississippi freshman Emma Wallhoff hit a school record 581 3-pointers. For now, Wallhoff will look to find a shooting rhythm in Westminster Academy’s offense.
I can promise you will hear [player_tooltip player_id="221692" first="Princess" last="Kemp"] on the floor. The 6-foot-1 center made her voice heard when Chaminade-Madonna had the ball near her. Communication, after all, is a big part of the game. Offensively, Kemp has the frame to score and rebound around the rim.
