We look for the little things that go with the big numbers. One aspect of a players game that I hold in high value are hustle points. How often is your team successful because of your hustle? Did your extra energy get a stop on D or help get a big bucket? At the Flight Hankamp Scrimmages, there were players that were putting it all on the line. They were doing the little things that helped their team be successful. They were scoring hustle points. Let’s look at a few of those players.
Hailey Freshcorn Hailey Freshcorn 5'8" | PG Columbia Central | 2024 State MI (2024, G, Onsted)
Freshcorn puts it all on the line every single time she hits the court. If she needs to, she’ll play every single minute of a game, and it won’t effect her performance. Trust me, I’ve seen her do just that before. Freshcorn was showing that same hustle all day at the Flight Hankamp Scrimmages. She hit the floor for loose balls and was working incredibly hard off the ball at the event. Freshcorn almost looks disappointed when she sits for a breather during a game.
Nya Sanders (2022, G, University High)
Sanders had the look of a leader for her team, often pushing her squad and keeping them engaged at all times. She set an example with her grit as well. Sanders was ready and willing to defend anywhere on the floor, from the post to the perimeter. She showed a ton of hustle on the defensive end. This was evident with her help defense, intensity in going after the ball, and willingness to hit the floor for a loose ball.
Lizzy Scharer Lizzy Scharer 5'4" | PG Lenawee Chrisrian | 2022 State MI (2022, G, Adrian Lenawee Christian)
Scharer seemed like the player that made the offense go for Lenawee Christian. She was in constant attack mode off the dribble. Scharer penetrated the lane and fought off contact when doing so. When she broke down the defense, she wasn’t just looking to get hers, but instead found teammates for a dump off pass in scoring position and hit open shooters with a firm kick out pass. I can’t help but think that almost every coach would want a lead guard like Scharer.
Avery Sluss (2023, F, Adrian Lenawee Christian)
Sluss grabbed my attention right when the scrimmages started. It was her work without the ball that immediately impressed me. She stepped to the perimeter repeatedly to set screens for her teammates. And about those screens, they were strong and physical and she even showed the proper positioning on them as well. Sluss was active on the boards as well, often times limiting the possessions for the Lenawee Christian opponents.
