With all of the “positionless” offense being played today, there may be some players in other positions here if they had a great shooting performance on the day I saw them play. But this is primarily the home of the 2’s and 3’s.
Allison Spieker Allison Spieker 5'8" | SG Whitefield Academy | 2024 State KY – ’24 5’7″/SF – Whitfield Academy
Spieker scored 27 points and nailed down the victory by forcing her opponents to either foul her or let her score at the rim. She secured her spot on this list by hitting 9 of 10 Free Throws down the stretch and displaying the shooters’ touch. When she doesn’t put the ball right down the middle of the hoop it rolls around the inside to the rim making no noise until it falls in light as a feather.
She made a steal during halfcourt defense to score at the other end, penetrated into the lane for a short floater, mailed a soft touch short jumper on the break, a couple of threes out of the offense, and a floater on a baseline drive. But most impressive was that she took over the game during “winning time” to help her critically under-manned team push a hard-fought game into the win column.
Ka’Niah Edelen Ka’Niah Edelen 5'7" | CG Male | 2023 State KY – ’23 5’5″/CG – Male
Edelen shot 2 for 4 from three-point range knocking down big shots from the wing and the corner. She finished with 13 points before fouling out for what I once heard described as “too much defense”. She was definitely part of the relentless defensive pressure of the deep Bulldogs team.
Sara Ritter – ’24 5’8″/SG – Whitefield Academy
Ritter has positioned herself as a third reliable scorer for the team this season with her high release three-point shot. She is also another solid ballhandling option who can find an open teammate within the offense or on the break.
She mainly contributes from the wing but also grabbed 5 rebounds including one for an opportunistic short jumper in the lane. She contributed 13 points in the season-opening win over Pleasure Ridge Park High School.
Mary Smith Mary Smith 5'7" | CG Mercy | 2023 State KY – ’23 5’10″/CG – Mercy Academy
To say that Smith was a quiet contributor in a game full of organized chaos would be right if, like me, you had no idea she had contributed 17 points for her team in a losing effort until you saw the Box Score. So, BOO ME, I’m not perfect.
Smith hit threes from the wing and corner, made a free throw line jumper, and made a critical 9 of ll free throws to keep her team in the game. She played strong with the ball against heavy defensive pressure and drew several fouls because of that. Next time I will try to pay more attention to what she is doing.
Grace White – ’22 5’8″/SG – Assumption
White made a three from the wing, the corner, and out top finishing 3 for 7 on the day and scoring 19 points. She also made an impact on a couple of rebound putbacks and by moving without the ball, once on a great backdoor cut for a layup.
Peyton Arnold – ’24 5’9″/SF – Mercy Academy
Arnold is currently a reserve but she can really shoot the ball and has very good size. She made one corner three and a wing three on only three attempts for the evening.
