It was an exciting first week of basketball with some great games and great performances. Here are some must watch games in week 2.
Sand Creek (1-1) vs. Arvada West (4-0) - Wednesday December 8th
The Wildcats are off to a hot start and will look to keep their win streak alive against the Scorpions. Arvada West has a balanced scoring attack and are led by Senior [player_tooltip player_id="145406" first="Amanda" last="Neff"] (11.7 ppg, 5 rpg). Junior sharpshooter [player_tooltip player_id="118728" first="Brooke" last="Meeks"] is shooting an incredible 45% from 3 this season. Junior [player_tooltip player_id="210325" first="Ellie" last="Pugliese"], Senior [player_tooltip player_id="207070" first="Sydney" last="Trinder"], Senior [player_tooltip player_id="118730" first="Payton" last="Reed"], and Freshman Avery Harrison all have had major contributions for the Wildcats on their hot start. They are a great defensive team and are holding their opponents to just under 25 ppg.
The Scorpions are coming off an impressive win over Vista Ridge. They are led by three studs. Senior Riley Rodriguez (24 ppg) is a walking bucket who is shooting 82% from the free-throw line through two games. Freshman Tahjianna Vinson (15.5 ppg, 9 rpg) had two very impressive games last week and is one of the state's top freshman that needs to be on everyone's radar. Senior [player_tooltip player_id="259823" first="Tamika" last="Williams"] (11 ppg) is a four year varsity player that is shooting 40% from the field.
Cherry Creek (2-2) vs. Highlands Ranch (2-2) - Wednesday December 8th
Both teams were out in California last week playing in a California tournament. These two powerhouses match up for what should be one of the best games all season. Highlands Ranch uses their size and length to score on teams but the Bruins are one of the few teams in Colorado who can match their length and athleticism.
The Bruins have some talented young pieces that will make them scary for the next four years. Freshmen [player_tooltip player_id="327638" first="A'Neya" last="Chambers"], [player_tooltip player_id="361565" first="Braelynn" last="Barnett"], and [player_tooltip player_id="361564" first="Tiana" last="Chambers"] are some of the most talented young players in Colorado. They have a unique size and skillset that will be a nightmare for teams all season. Senior [player_tooltip player_id="117690" first="Charley" last="Gordon"] averaged 7.2 ppg last season and is poised to have a great final year. She shot 33% from 3 last year.
The Falcons are led by Senior [player_tooltip player_id="117699" first="Emily" last="Hovasse"] (15 ppg) and Senior [player_tooltip player_id="95179" first="Alex" last="Pirog"] (8.5 ppg). Pirog is one of the state's best posts. She uses a variety of moves to score around the basket. Both players have a strong inside presence and impose their will against their opponents. Highlands Ranch does have some talented young pieces that will be exciting to watch on this stage. Freshman [player_tooltip player_id="118719" first="Tori" last="Baker"] and Freshman [player_tooltip player_id="361386" first="Ezra" last="Simonich"] got some good minutes out in California. This will be an exciting back-and-forth game.
Clear Creek (2-1) vs. Flatirons Academy (2-0) - Friday December 10th
The Bison are loaded again this season and are looking to become back-to-back champions. They are led by Junior [player_tooltip player_id="145424" first="Kenlee" last="Durrill"] (20.5 ppg) who is a walking bucket and one of the state's best players. Sophomore [player_tooltip player_id="327642" first="Emily" last="Dehaan"] (14.5 ppg) is off to a hot start through two games. She is one of the best shooters I have seen with near-perfect form. She can also take people off the dribble and finish well around the hoop. Sophomore [player_tooltip player_id="263610" first="Emma" last="Cox"] is an exceptional athlete who runs the floor well and rebounds at a high rate.
The Golddiggers are led by two standout Seniors. Loralei Murphy is averaging 13 points, 8 rebounds, and 4 steals through her first three games. Aiden Kocol is averaging 12 points, 9 rebounds, and 4 steals. Both Seniors give Clear Creek some experience to go against this talented Bison team. Should be a great game with some great individual performances.
Thunderridge (2-1) vs. Horizon (1-2) - Friday December 10th
The Grizzlies and Hawks matchup on Friday night in what is set to be one of the best games of the week. Both teams feature talented upperclassmen alongside highly touted Freshman and Sophomores. Grizzlies' Senior Regan Keyter is off to a great start this season averaging 13 points and 5 rebounds per game. Thunderridge has a ton of younger talent who can all score in flurries when they get hot. Lengthy 6'-1" Sophomore [player_tooltip player_id="216683" first="Ben" last="Kayser-Cochran"] is a matchup nightmare. They can shoot, drive, and score around the rim. Fellow Sophomores [player_tooltip player_id="216642" first="Alexis" last="Baker"] and Rebecca Winton are both averaging 10+ ppg. They handle pressure well and take care of the ball. Freshman Candace Baker knocked down 5 three-pointers last week against Dakota Ridge. They have a lot of scoring options.
The Hawks are led by Senior [player_tooltip player_id="117703" first="Audra" last="Vine"] who is averaging an impressive 23 ppg. Their Sophomore class is loaded with players like [player_tooltip player_id="331177" first="Natalie" last="Thornton"], [player_tooltip player_id="331323" first="Morgan" last="Ives"], Zoe Scarborough, and Marisol Miranda. The Hawks are loaded with shooters and that may be the difference against Thunderridge's 2-3 zone. Freshman [player_tooltip player_id="329394" first="Kaitlin" last="Schumann"] is one of the state's top freshman and is off to a solid start. She is averaging 6.3 rpg so far this season.
