2022 FHSAA State Tournament Top Scorers By Michael Wholey 3/15/22 10:00 AM EST The FHSAA State Tournament wrapped up last week, we take a look at the top scorers from the week long event in Lakeland and the RP Funding Center. [player_tooltip player_id="118146" first="Ta’Niya" last="Latson"] (American Heritage) – Class of 2022 – 5’10 Guard Latson was the state tournaments high school dropping 31 points in the semi-final game vs Pine Forest and then followed it up with 24 points in the final’s vs Bishop Moore, averaging 27 points per game for the FHSAA state tournament. The Florida State signee got it done offensively from all spots on the court and in a variety of ways. She shot 64% from the field going 18/28, 75% from 3 going ¾, 88% from free throw line going 15/17, while also averaging 6 assists and 9 rebounds. She was the weeks top player and rightfully so was named Florida’s Gatorade Player of the Year. [player_tooltip player_id="243895" first="Lena" last="Girardi"] (Westminster Academy) – Class of 2025 – 6’0 Guard In the semi-finals, Girardi went toe to toe with [player_tooltip player_id="91556" first="Tonie" last="Morgan"] from Florida State. The back and forth was an impressive battle to watch with Girardi dropping 27 points and leading her team to the win, while Morgan dropped 26. In the win, Girardi was 9/15 from the field and 9/11 from the free throw line while also grabbing 14 rebounds, playing all but 51 seconds of the game. [player_tooltip player_id="91556" first="Tonie" last="Morgan"] (Florida State University) – Class of 2022 – 5’8 Guards In the battle with Girardi, Morgan did everything she could to keep Florida State University in the game but in the end her 26 points were not enough. Morgan dropped 26 on 8/21 shooting, 2/5 from 3, and 8/12 from free throw line. The skilled guard played pretty much the entire game, serving as both the teams primary ball handler and lead scorer. [player_tooltip player_id="91603" first="Tahnyjia" last="Purifoy"] (Pine Forest) – Class of 2022 – 5’0 Guard Pine Forest dropped the semi-final game to American Heritage 77-49 but it was not without Purifoy doing everything she could to try and help her team to victory. Purifoy accounted for over half of her teams’ points, scoring 26 of the teams 49 points on 11/27 from the field, 2/7 from 3, and 2/4 from the free throw line. [player_tooltip player_id="91555" first="Nyla" last="Harris"] (Lake Highland Prep) – Class of 2022 – 6’2 Forward If Ta’Nia Latson was the MVP of the state tournament, than Harris was runner up. She had 26 points and 21 rebounds in the 4A State championship game vs Calvary Christian on 12/16 from the field while going for 32 points and 21 rebounds on 7/10 from the field and 9/12 from the free throw line in Lake Highland Prep semi-final game vs Booker. [player_tooltip player_id="154908" first="Enjulina" last="Gonzalez"] (Miami Christian) – Class of 2022 – 5’9 Guard Gonzalez was very good in 2A State Championship leading Miami Christian to a 66-59 win over Faith Christian. Gonzalez was the team’s leading scorer, dropping 24 points on 7/10 from the field and 10/11 from free throw line while also grabbing 10 rebounds, 4 assists, and 3 steals.
