Joyce is a leader and all around complete player when looking at her from an individual stand point. She possesses the great ability to pass the ball, she gets help with that day in and out as her center is Audi Crooks Audi Crooks 6’3″ | C Bishop Garrigan | 2023 State #42 Nation IA , the Iowa State Women’s Basketball commit. Last season Joyce was one of the top scorers throughout the state of Iowa in any class. She scored the ball near the hoop, in the mid range with a nice runner, or far away from beyond the three point line. Her efficient shooting ability gives her the chance to drive on her opponents when they rise up to block a shot. Pair this along with the skill to protect her dribble, finish and make free throws, there is no wonder she was as dominate as she was during the 21′-22′ season. This winter she will look be the piece that once again brings it all together for Bishop Garrigan as they attempt to repeat. I would be curious to see what type of numbers she would put up if she were the main focus of her teams offense but at her high school, they keep it a good balance making them very difficult to gameplay against.
Highlights
Grace Gaarde Grace Gaarde 5’3″ | PG Iowa City Regina | 2023 State IA is a major key to the success of the Regina Regals as they will look to compete during the regular season and into the playoffs. Making the state tournament last year after a solid season was always in the cards for the Regals with a fluid offense, good defensive system, veteran players, and good coaching. This season will tend to bring more obstacles though as they will lose their presence in the middle due to graduation. I don’t see this impacting Gaarde and other guard play but instead forcing them to elevate their games to another league so that the Regals can still compete at the same level they did a year ago. Gaarde, the 5’4 point guard, is a scoring first guard who likes to shoot the three ball. She does a good job of having the same shooting form every shot she puts up, along with being able to dribble and finish on a fast break. On top of the basketball skill she possesses, she is a great teammate. Always being a vocal influence while leading with positivity. During the 21′-22′ season it was the back court play of Gaarde and Morgan Miller Morgan Miller 5’9″ | PG Iowa City Regina | 2025 State IA which led their team on its big playoff run. I don’t see that changing much this winter.
Aubrey Luvan Aubrey Luvan 5’3″ | PG Cedar Rapids Jefferson | 2023 State IA had a great summer on the AAU circuit for Team Iowa , being a dynamic play maker and main contributor for her team. Luvan is a combo guard who tends to play the point position but with her shooting ability she could be moved to the shooting guard position. When watching her game what really jumps off the paper is how well she can shoot the ball, wether it be in transition, during an offensive set, or off the catch/dribble. She only has to see one make go through the hoop and it’ll be a long day for the defense. This season she will start her senior year for the Cedar Rapids – Jefferson Jayhawks. She will be asked to be a consistent shooter, as she is known to be, along with having the job to bring up the ball at times. With herself and Emma Slings Emma Slings 5’9″ | PG Jefferson | 2023 State IA on the court, they have the luxury of either player running as the point guard and constructing the offense. With the addition of their new coach I could see him running a system in which they push the pace as much as possible, trying to beat opponents by outworking them from the tip but we will have to see.
