She Got Next, hosted by A1 Hoops Report, took place at the home of the 5A Timberwolves as opposed to Brookland-Cayce HS. Plenty of teams converged on the school and displayed that even though it may be early in the season, they are in midseason form.
We at Prep Girls Hoops also made it out to the Timberwolves’ home courts to take it all in. Here are a few from just outside of Charlotte that turned in stellar performances.
Morris stands at 5-foot-10 and is transitioning seamlessly into being a veteran with the Stallions. Her positioning when another player is shooting a free throw can put her in position to grab a rebound in case of a miss. Morris will also draw her fair share of contact and get to the free throw line. She will shoot a good number of 3-point attempts, can get from one end of the floor to the other in a quick amount of time and combines that speed with plenty of court vision. She lived up to her “star” name against the Eagles as Morris concluded said game against Military Magnet having scored 13 points – including the go-ahead basket in overtime that won the game for South Pointe.
McCloud previously wore the uniform of Indian Land before transferring and sporting the signature red of the Stallions. McCloud was everywhere on the floor for the Stallions in what was an intense matchup against a battle-tested defending 1A champion Military Magnet. Rebounding and the preparedness to box out in case of a missed free throw attempt are among the things she does well. McCloud is 5-foot-8 and typically does much of her work as a shooting guard. A team’s rebounding capabilities are also helped with her on a roster and she can connect at the free throw line. She finished with 12 points in the contest against the Eagles.
One of the more entertaining contests of Friday’s play occurred on the main court at White Knoll – when the 4A Trojans earned a 51-50 victory over the 5A Gators of River Bluff. Northwestern needed every one of the 26 points Grigg dropped to will Northwestern to victory. In addition to ball handling skills, Grigg also spearheaded the Trojans’ attack from behind the 3-point line. In close contests such as Trojans-Gators, games are won at the free throw line and Grigg put a good number of free throw attempts through the basket in the second half. In the closing seconds, Grigg dribbled out the clock to seal a Northwestern win.
If any matchup as part of Friday’s schedule had a postseason feel, it was South Pointe vs. Military Magnet. Lucas got to be part of it and she completely embraced the big-game feel. One can count on Lucas to consistently attack the basket and give her team strong finishes at said basket. She will also get out in transition to complete plays. Her accuracy can also be seen with her free throw shooting. Lucas is an up-and-comer that plays with the talent and maturity of an upperclassman – hence why she is on the Stallions’ varsity roster. She finished the matchup with 13 points in a hotly contested tilt between the two teams.
Jatiyah Shannon
Jatiyah Shannon
Shannon scored an important basket in the overtime period of the 4A Stallions’ matchup with 1A Military Magnet that initially gave South Pointe a 66-64 lead. Those two points also upped her individual point total to 11. A good bit of the plays Shannon can make can be near the rim. She also reads defenses extremely well and seems to be a step ahead of her opponents. Shannon will also be ready to box out in case of an opponent’s missed free throw and can complete a few old-fashioned 3-point plays with the contact she absorbs and strength she possesses to finish at the rim.
