However, without these players the elite can’t be elite and wins turn to losses. These are the players that are needed to win championships and they showed their value this past Sunday.
Aliyah was very efficient at the point. She controlled the pace and tempo and knew when and how to pick her spots in the game to score. She finished with 14 points and the respect from the opposing coach who wanted to know who she was after the game. She was more than capable of filling the void with Zania Barnett out. It will be interesting to see them play off of each other when she returns late December.
Morgan Stewart
Morgan Stewart
Morgan has good size at the forward position and she drives to the basket well. She played with a lot of confidence scoring 8 of her 13 points in the third quarter. She even showed that she can knock down the 3-pointer. SJC has had a good history of allowing freshmen to reach their potential and Morgan looks to be another in line of freshmen that came into the program making an immediate impact.
The last time we saw LaBrea she had on a Bullis jersey playing against Riverdale Baptist. Now the freshman still has the blue and gold but with a Crusaders logo on the front. She looks like she’s starting to get the feel for her new teammates scoring 7 points in the game. She has a college frame and is physical getting to the basket. Her form looks good and I can see the freshman expanding her perimeter game as the season progresses.
Lyla is another on the list of standout freshmen in the game. The 6’3″ swing player has a nice stroke from beyond the arc. She scored all of her 9 points in the second half that included a pair of 3’s in the fourth quarter. Lefties have a reputation for their shooting and Lyla doesn’t change that perception.
Highlights
Ava’s value may not have showed in the stat sheet but her contribution was immeasurable. She was tasked with handling the full court pressure that the Crusaders put on and get the Cadets into their offense. She did it well and added some defensive pressure of her own as she was disruptive on the court. She added a timely 3 pointer in the fourth that put the Cadets up in the quarter. St. John’s WCAC success will center around Ava this season.
