Here’s a closer look at some standouts from the game:
Palmer took over this contest in the second half, scoring 18 of her game-high 30 points after the intermission and helping her team overcome a nine-point deficit at the break. Palmer impressed me as a freshman last season at Class 2A West Branch. I was interested how she would transition to 5A. She did so seamlessly. She’s a complete, two-way combo-guard. She shows a great handle, can shoot from deep, penetrates defenses off the bounce and passes well. She plays solid, on-ball defense and rebounds. She boasts nice size and strength for a guard. I’ll wager she’s one of the better ’25s I see this season.
Highlights
Emmy McComas
Emmy McComas
One of the better ’25 volleyball players in the state, McComas also shines on the basketball court. She stands out for her work in the paint, crashing the backboards for rebounds and powering through contact for inside buckets. She can handle the ball and shoot from the outside as well. Defense might be the best part of her game. She guards well on the perimeter and in the lane.

It was fun watching Driscoll’s much-anticipated high school debut. The freshman point guard did not disappoint. She ran the Little-Hawk show well, getting the squad into its offense and working on the front of the defense. She’s long and athletic. When she develops physically and adds strength to her advanced skill set, she’ll be an even bigger problem for opponents.
Slings will be a super addition to the Division II McKendree University Bearcats next season. She’s effective playing on or off the ball. She shows a smooth outside shot and effectively breaks down defenders with the dribble. She brings good leadership as well. Slings is rock solid.
Harris struggled with finishing her shots in this game, but her ability in creating them stood out. She gets around defenders off of the bounce regularly with both hands. She hits the glass hard and defends at a high level. She has good size and long arms, jumps well and offers good athleticism. Kirkwood will welcome her with open arms in ’23-24.
Luvan is one of those kids you want to guard as soon as she gets off the bus. She displays excellent form on her three-point shot and a quick release, and moves well without the ball to get open. She handles it well and is fast with it in her possession. She makes up for being shorter than most opponents on defense by being aggressive, physical and beating them to spots. She’ll be an excellent addition at Clarke University next season.
