Wednesday was the opening day of the SCHSL playoffs as first-round matchups took place for the 1A, 2A and 5A girls classifications (as well as 3A, 4A and 5A for the boys tournament).

One of those 2A first-round matchups featured a pair of Lowcountry teams in Woodland and Bishop England. Coach Paul Runey's Bishops led for nearly the entire contest – including when it mattered most when the final buzzer sounded.

Bishop England (16-11) dispatched of the homestanding Wolverines (13-9) with the final score being 44-29. The Bishops will take on Lee Central (from Bishopville, ironically) in the second round after its 65-25 win over Cheraw.

Home Game or Neutral Site?

Bishop England brought a healthy contingency with it to Woodland HS as the contest felt at times less like a Wolverines home game and more like a neutral site contest.

What Happened Last Time?

The Bishops and Wolverines last exchanged pleasantries at the 2018-19 Carolina Invitational. Bishop England thrashed Woodland that time by a final of 66-38. That was part of a season where the Bishops finished 28-1 en route to a 3A state championship.

Quarter By Quarter

Bishop England began the game with a 4-0 run that was answered by a 6-0 scoring binge by Woodland. In the fouls department, the Bishops had five to the Wolverines' two but where it mattered most saw Bishop England leading 10-8 after one.

Both teams traded 3-pointers to begin the second quarter and at one point, the Bishops embarked on an 8-0 that grew its lead to 18-11. That lead would be nine as Bishop England had a 25-16 edge over the Wolverines.

The third quarter was arguably the most lopsided frame of the matchup as the Bishops outscored the Wolverines by a margin of 12-4. Bishop England was ahead 37-20 with three quarters in the books.

Woodland showed signs of life early in the fourth quarter, but it was not enough to overcome the deficit established by the Bishops in the earlier trio of stanzas. The game concluded with Bishop England having won by 15 points.

The Wolverines had few answers for junior guard [player_tooltip player_id='206616' first='Isabella' last='Woods'], who led all scorers with 15 points. Woods had plenty of success getting out in transition and delivering strong finishes at the rim. She is also an effective point runner.

Leading the Bishops' attack from behind the 3-point line was Lissie Van De Erve, who finished the game with 11 points (all in the first half). Out of those 11 were three 3-pointers. She is listed at 5-foot-7 and is a sophomore.

Carmen Allen, a freshman, led all Woodland scorers with eight points. She also had herself a pair of 3-point makes – including one in the waning moments of the contest. This season was her second with the Wolverines after being on the varsity assembling last season as an eighth grader.

The Wolverines are graduating three seniors from this season's team – including Camyria Goodwin who took home All-State and All-Region honors. The other two are Kayla Ferrell and Shynel McClenton.
